Love to see guys like Gainey win with their home-made swings. I assume he's the first to win on the PGA Tour with his left thumb in the Gene Sarazen position since Sarazen. Brandel Chamblee mentioned how he hangs back on his right side thru impact.

Just goes to comfirm the old adage that their isn't one set of fundamentals that fit everyone. Gainey figured out his own swing and is lucky he never let anyone try and change it.

One of the best threesomes with home-made swings I followed around on a golf course were Jim Thorpe, Dana Quigley and Allan Doyle. Three swings nobody would teach, but man can they play golf at a high level. Gainey is in that catagory as well.

I actually thought this guy would be the one...

Did anybody watch him on the Big Break and think he would win a PGA tournament some day? My gosh, one of the great stories in PGA Tour history!

At that time the was one of the truly dominant mini tour players around. Sort of like Boo Weekly. These guys just need the confidence to assimilate and the opportunity that q-school gives them.

You tube Eamonn Darcy; I played with him one day and I still cant believe it!

Well, I have played with Allen Doyle, Dana Quigley, and Jim Thorpe as well as Calvin Peete and Charlie Owens (cross handed and fused left knee). More than one way to "skin a cat".

In my last Senior Tour "Tour School" in early Dec 1998 (Greenlefe West near Orlando), I was paired with Jim Thorpe in the last round. He qualified easily with a final round 69 or 70 while I faded to 20th with a 76. The tour official in the scoring tent said to Jim after he signed his card - "Congrats, you have just become a rich man".

Also qualifying that year, Bruce Fleisher, Allen Doyle (medalist) Dana Quigley and Howard Twitty. remember the rest.

I don't doubt your story, but the year (2008) has to be wrong. I go to the (what was the Outback Pro-Am) Champions Tournament every year in Tampa (actually Lutz) and these guys were already playing on the Champions Tour by 2008.

Quigley by that time had already won ~ $13 million on the Champions Tour and Thorpe and Doyle are in the same ballpark.

Quigley is a very nice guy as is his brother Billy who caddied for him. Being from New England I had a few conversations with them. Thorpe is very approachable also. Have heard stories about Doyle, but my experience with him was a positve one.

All three are good friends with each other and often would play practice rounds together. They're getting older now and you don't see them as much on the leader boards, but I'd rather watch them play than anyone else (at that time) playing on the Champions Tour.

Keefer -

I had a good tournament at the Outback Pro Am in 1995. Finished 5th (or tied for 5th) after "4 spotting" on Monday. Stockton won that year - I was either 2 or 3 strokes back.

Good work.... That's before I moved down here (2002). When I started going it was Verizon who was the title sponsor. Did they play it at the TPC in Lutz back then? The PGA Tour sold the course a few years ago , but the new owners were allowed to keep the TPC name.

Great golf course. Had a connection there for awhile and played it many times. Recently they've had some of the qualifiers (Outback and Innisbrook) at my home course (Fox Hollow) in New Port Richey.

Yes the 95 tournament was at the TPC course. I did my qualifier for that event at Fox Hollow.

Small world. If you remember Fox Hollow was Robert Trent Jones's (Sr.) last design. In 1995 there probably weren't as many homes around Fox Hollow as there are now.
