Americans, for the most part are really soft.
As a coach, I get to see more than my fair share. Parents, for the most part do not want you to be hard on their "precious" and the parents that do demand a little excellence from their kids are deemed "psycho" and the second coming of Todd Marinovich's dad or Sean O'Hair's dad, which is totally not the case, they just want their kids to push themselves to do well. You can demand of kids without being a nutcase, IMO.
I agree with the above post, too many programs teaching "character", but it is the wrong kind of character, it is not the character of toughness, but of being a nice guy. The quote "nice guys finish last" was created for a reason, because, really it's true.
Please don't take me out of context, I think character of honesty and integrity and toughness is important, IOW, being a stand up person, but what kids are taught from an early age now is to be a pushover, and that is sad.
