Defying the odds: Am I a schizo?

We all have peeks and valleys in our game, but I believe that I personally defy the odds. In the last month I have:

74
75
77
77
77
92
94
95
89
86

(not in that order) at the same course from the same tees in similar weather. Is this eerily outside the normal standard deviation?

Of course, I'm trending to a 6 HCP because of the low scores, but this seems to fall outside of statistical norms. Do any of you vary to this extreme?

that is a rather large divination in scores... I know I have never shot a 74, but I havent shot in the 90s but once in 4 years... Im usualy always high 70s low 80s...

Yes! DIVINATION :) He might be able to predict who will win the masters by adding up all the numbers, dividing them by 2, adding a 19, using the 2 digit number in the 3rd step, and using that to give him the birthday of that player.

I would have never gotten broken low 80's if it were not for Brian and this forum.

But I would never have flipped between 74/92 and 75/94 and 77/95 either.

I don't have an identity. I am a mimic. I'll do a Furyk loop one week, then attempt Sergio-like lag the next week. This week was Hogan's tucked right elbow, flat shoulder turn and his little hip bump. I will hit pull fades on purpose one week, then hit push-draws the next week.- by design of course.

Some weeks I have swing that produces 135 yard knock down 9-irons. Some weeks I hit giant 155 yard nine irons. I'll flip/flop hitting 4 iron 185 yards to 6-iron 190 yards.

My 74 was in a tournament on Saturday (Slope 131) and that included two three putts, two separate missed 4-footers and one lost ball. 95 came in the same week. Three weeks ago, I shot a 5-birdie 77 in the same week that I shot 94.

I'm hard to teach, because I am a moving target. Now since I am coming fresh off the 74, I will continue that persona de jure until it fails me.

I think your scoring trends are statistically on the mark..... for YOU. If you keep a GHIN I think they only track the low 10 anyway, so your big numbers probably won't have much impact. That's some interesting scoring and swing philosophy. "I'm hard to teach" sounds like the understatement of the year. ;) We'd love to have you participate in our regular game...... there would be guys lined up to get a bet with you. You'll get your ghin, but it sounds like 2 times outta 3 you get to pay up. :)

Sounds like you still don't know what causes the ball to fly the way it does.

Learn that. The rest just facilitates it.

My opinion (which isn't much) would be to stop the above if you really want to get better. It's fun to mess around with new swings but I think you should have ONE swing and then go with it. Hard to shoot consistent scores when your swing pattern isn't. Most pro's can't even work the ball both ways the best. I have dropped my experimentation and my consistency and scores have improved.

Good luck, you obviously have a good game.

yeah I used to do this kind of thing too... Its hard not to, but really I have forced myself to stick to one thing out on the course, and figure out the rest on the range.
I think the reason I did this before was because I never went to the range, the course was where I figured things out. It makes the day interesting....;)

well, I have my tuesday off, Im out to play a superb game of golf. Ill be sure to let you all know what i shoot... and see if my pops will take some video for me.

This is my story exactly. My scores look like that too. When it happens for me it is always two to three bad shots that take a round tracking for 75 and make it high 80's. I am not constantly trying to change my swing, but I do constantly have a different swing thought to try and battle a bad pull or pull hook. My iron distances are not that erratic, but my ability hit my hybrids and driver are. I always thought I would kill somebody to shoot the scores I am shooting now, but it is almost more painful to be able to shoot in the 70's and still throw a 90 on the card. I feel your pain!

Same as dsmith for me. Can shoot some phenomenal low 70's scores...in tournaments and can also shoot 85 a lot.

It was bad this past weekend. My fourball partner and I were playing and he finally had enough...his quote...."you are as good as anybody (in our club) except for between the ears you have to learn that hitting it perfect isn't good golf...it is a rarity that even pros don't have everyday, quit being too hard on yourself and just play"

I have thought a lot about what he said this week. I just don't know how to go about correcting some things.

dsmith, I'm in the same boat you are in. I sometimes get real erratic, but it's usually because I'm trying to change things or have a different swing thought. One day, I'm trying to hit, one day, I'm swinging, one day switting, who the hell knows what I'm doing day to day.

I had a tournament earlier this year, where you had to play two qualifiying rounds. I went 91/75 in consecutive days on the same course same tees.

I sometimes get bored using the same swing and always like to think there is a better way, hmmm maybe there isn't:)

I am the opposite........

Of my last 35 games, 27 of them have been between 78-82. I haven't shot better than 77 in 2.5 years.

Funny, I didn't even mention last year's club championship wherein I was the leader in the clubhouse in the first flight (after championship flight) with a 73 and followed it up with an 88. Glad the tournament score finally dropped off when I posted 88 & 90 -ish in this years champs.

This could just be the cross I bear. I played tennis in highschool. I had a guy down 6-0, 5-0, 40-love and I got mad at myself for not calling his losing shot out. Guess what-- I lost the match. Then in regionals I had a guy 5-0, 30-love in the first and lost that set 7-5 and the next 6-2. But I never changed my stroke in Tennis. So I think Tennis was psychological whereas golf seems more mechanical changes. I never thought about wrist bend and shoulder turns in tennis. I just knocked the crap out of forehands and serves. But, much like golf, I had bad touch-- bad volleys, bad putter.

In any event, I hit well at the range today.

blah, I played horrible today, I didn't even want to look at my swing, salvaged an 85, felt like i played to a 105... although, with my handicap, i really shot an 81... couple of really horrid holes. but yeah, i usually shoot between 78 and 84, and don't delineate far from that in either direction...
