develop lag

Could someone please explain, how to develop the feel of lag? I have always casted the club from the top and cannot seem to get a feel of clubhead lag.

have someone pull on the shaft when it is at hip high (Venturi's drill). Feel the points in your hands that support that pull? Those are pressure points. Learn to feel them during your swing, especially at the change of direction. You will notice a smooth and heavy feeling of the club. Read Brian's lag article for an excellent image (shopping cart).

Thanks Edz, I was always a pull hitter in baseball and have been a pull hitter in golf, but I'm trying to change.

Remove your thumb from the club & point it at the target.

Hit balls.

Report back.

Can you elaborate on this drill, Brian? Which hand are we talking about here?

So sorry....

Your RIGHT thumb.

.....

Make sure you have a TRIGGERed Forefinger.

Instead of putting the thumb on the shaft...hover it off the shaft and point it a the target at address.

Hit balls.

you'll see....

I may just put in here that clubhead lag is not holding the wristcock - this is accumulator lag....

The clubhead lag is the stressing of the clubshaft....

Cool...I actually didn't know that.

Still gotta get through my yellow book...

Thanks Mattski.

BTW Brian...you don't want him to put his trigger finger on top of the grip? You used to like that one, no?

Off topic for a second.

I had an assignment to photograph a First Tee summer golf program at a summer camp the other day, all minority kids around the age ten. The instructor was showing how to grip the club. One little kid was having a problem with the interlocking grip he was shown.
The instructor said, “Point your hand like a gun, like this.” The little boy just stared up at the instructor and did nothing.
“Look, said the instructor, “take your right hand, make a gun and point it. You can point your hand like a gun, can’t you?”
The little kid, eyes still staring up to the instructor said, “ My momma won’t let me do that.”

I was so proud of that kid.

And prouder still of his Momma.

Thanks Brian, I'll give that a try this afternoon. By the way I grew in Covington, not too far from your home base and I do bleed purple and gold.

What kind of Lag?

1. Pivot Lag
2. Accumulator Lag
3. Clubhead Lag

Seriously... we need to start in one of the 3 Zones to find the "leak"!!!

Learn Clubhead Lag doing stage 1's
Acquire Accumulator Lag doing stage 2's
Add Pivot Lag during stage 3's

Cirriculum is straight out of Chapter 12

If you own the little yellow book...you got the anwers to the TEST!!!

Every day is an "open book" quiz...Make A's my friends...make A's

NAT, I'm not sure what kind of lag, that is why I have never read the book (too complicated). When I hit a normal shot the clubhead is past my hands at impact (no compression with the irons). I just want my hands in front at impact to get good compression and lower ball flight.

Brian, tried your drill last evening, works very well (what a feeling)
I don't understand how it works but it does work. Thanks

If I understand the drill correctly, you trigger the right index figure and have the right thumb point at the target (Horizontal)?

Wanna know what lag is? As you are walking out the door, tell your wife you are going to see your girlfriend.....then wait.

The never slice again article and the twistaway is my personal favorite method for learning to feel lag pressure.

One addtion. Long ago, Brian mentioned one should visualize that one is striking the ball high on the clubface.

Great visualization. Possibly the best one I've read.Eyes and mind should match feel. Drag the sweetspot. I used to drag the leading edge because when practicing chips and pitches, I was looking at the leading edge, and that stuck in my head. Not only feel the dragging of the sweetspot. Visualize it.

NAT,

Believe it or not....people don't want terminology...they want results.

If a TGM tertm is the easier route in the EXPLANATION game...like extensor action...then I use it.

If it aint....I don't.

And MOST of the time, I have a Manzella curriculum that fits the occasion better....like the last two days in Orlando.

BENTON....

Call me anytime at 502.417.4653 and I'll tell you why it works without confusing you.

DDL and Brian,

This is something I haven't considered. How's this work? Why high on the clubface?

Thanks!

Because if you have leakage (of lag)...you are likely gonna hit up on it kinda- flip it (lose lag- like in "Confessions of a Former Flipper"), right?

And if the ball is sitting on the ground...and you have leakage and you hit UP on it...you'll hit it thin too...if you don't whiff it or hit it fat.

Say the ball is sitting on a tight lie. Like concrete....

...You're not gonna hit it closer to the top of the clubface by hitting up. And if you hit it "level" (i.e. at the bottom of the circle that your clubhead traces- your swing arc) you're not gonna consistently hit it towards the top of the clubface either.

You have to learn to hit down...slightly.

Brian,

Just using the language of TGM...sorry

Terminology...is just that terminology

One's ablilty to "demonstrate their knowledge" correctly...then to get the student to understand and execute is the clear indicator...of who really knows...Application of Knowledge...NOT BOOK KNOWLEDGE and TERMINOLOGY...

I know a ton of people that KNOW the book...how many can do the BOOK!

People take lessons from people that can DO IT!!!

That's why you're busy...very busy...RIGHT!!!

You can ask Lynn Blake, ecox, philly golf,6Bee1Dee and Chuck Evans...they've seen me hit it and swing it!!!

That's why you're not scared to post your swing on these forums...because you know your stuff...

I have respect for your work...

So keep it up!!!

NON

PS. My swing's not Perfect...NOT EVEN CLOSE...But how many people on the forum or the others can come close to doing the Book?

Oh yeah I weigh 30 lbs more now...than I did when I played in competition. So please trim off some inches...
