Divots?

This may be a silly question to you pro's, but is a divot necessary?

Some times I leave a divot and sometimes I don't.

I have only been playing for a little over a year so I don't know all the golf terms.

Brian's videos have taught me a ton of good technics that I was lacking.

The lastest was my swing plane in which I was swinging out to in and I saw a video the other night which helped me.

Thanks again Brian, maybe I can make it to Baton Rogue or N.O. one day when your in town for a lesson. I am only a couple of hours away.

I thought so until yesterday. I was hitting pretty good (not really great ones) 6 irons in my lesson with Brian, yet making no divot. I commented on the lack of a divot to Brian and he replied not to worry about it. When I asked why? He told me I was hitting it with a descending blow and a flat left wrist, and impact was not thin. He said I was brushing the grass, just not taking a divot. He told me depending on a number of things, including the type of grass, you may make a correct swing and still not take much of a divot.

you should have some kind of divot, at least a "browning" of a the grass.

A lot of things can determine divots including:

angle of attack
delivery path type
sole configuration
turf
the amount of trigger delay
etc

Do my 2 ball drill to make sure you are hitting ball first. Put a ball parallel to your ball you are going to strike and you should see something on the other side of that ball you placed parallel, even if it's only a little it's ok. Just something on the foward side of the ball.

In my opinion a divot is a sure sign of good downward blow. It also shows you whether you are hitting square, hook, or slice.

You can put a tee all the way into the ground an inch or two in front of the ball(which is not on a tee), after your shot, check the tee-if you hit the ball first, the tee will be gone.
Many good players "pick" the ball and many pro's have done so for many years; a divot is not necessarily a good sign if you are a picker.
Contrarily, most good players who strike the ball first, do take a divot AFTER not before. Just the fact that one has taken a divot does not necessarily mean anything about the quality of the shot.
