Do my eyes deceive me? ....or, do almost all of these folks not.....

I believe what Brian is pointing out is that they are not trying to "stay centered" on the backswing.....not that anyone can adequately define "the center" anyway. There are multiple instananeous centers established throughout the movement of the swing.

Most great players have had lateral movement of those centers. The lateral shift of those centers slows down and stops as the clubhead gets closer to the ball.

In my opinion, some of the players that are trying to keep their "center(s)" in the same place are actually moving them backwards. In an effort to use a "stable" center to maintain and modulate swing radius...AND keep the orbit of the hands inside the orbit of the club, they've actually added stress and tension in the forearms (because of the last rotational center moving backwards).

It's been my observation that great ball strikers have had some lateral movement AND have fully released the golf club freely, and the orbit of the hands has stayed inside the orbit of the club.
This is PHENOMENAL. Thanks for the explanation :)

From a down the line view, the hands stay in their lane and the clubhead stays outside the hands lane.
Matt

Anyone care to help us out with a visual of this? - perhaps a dtl of someone doing it well paired against someone whose hands and clubhead do not stay in their lanes (too many PBRs).

I would appreciate it and I am sure it would be a great help to many. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the videos, but I don't know what I am looking for here. Where/what is the hands lane and with that what does it look like to keep the club "outside" that lane?

I look at Senden and I think I have it, then I kept going and it's not clear to me what we are talking about as others in here do not appear to keep the clubhead outside of what I thought the hands lane was. I know folks are averse to drawing lines, but that would perhaps help. Appreciate the efforts very much Lia.

Unfortunately, I don't own a line drawing program. But here's a few things I see:

1.) "Out front" takeaways where the hands stay in, shaft stays out.
2.) Vertical hand paths on the downswing.
3.) Tumble!
4.) Awesome last parallel positions (especially the vertical, or fairly vertical, left arm positions).
5.) Free releases

I hope that helps!

Also...

Holmes's hands go too far out, merely dragging, with the resultant shank.

has there been an answer from brian yet? i can tell that all have made a full backswing and have their back completely facing the target.

One of the most important concepts for me is keeping the sweetspot outside the hands. It was fairly easy to do on the backswing but sweetspot would get underplane when my right elbow moved back to my side (the so-called move that I practiced over and over) So my elbow would be in nice and tight but the face would be open and the hosel would lag...which I "fixed" by releasing my hands...fore left! Now I can return my right elbow close to my right hip while lagging the sweetspot. How? TUMBLE!

Indeed. This is key for me to not hook my driver. Once I figured out to keep it outside the hands and loops it a little on the backswing to retain pressure on the shaft... the results have been phenomenal.

Maybe he should have been my pick this week! 4 shots behind a streaking Rory. Still Thursday though.
