Durable Irons

I need new irons baaaad.

Mine are about 5 years old and are dinged up like crazy and the chrome is coming off a few clubs. (no jokes about hitting from the junk please ;))

I do not want forged irons this time around. I want something durable and I don't think forged makes much of a difference feel-wise anyway.

Actually.....I at least want nothing chromed.

So- question: what about something stainless or with a satin finish (even if forged)...can there be a problem with anything like chrome peeling? I assume there won't be with these forged satin clubs....although I'm not sure.

...

Anyhoo........they must be durable and with low/lowish offset and thin/thinnish topline.

My list as of now:

-PING s58
-PING i10 (provided they are nice looking enough and I can get them heavier than D0....ughhh)
-Callaway X-20 Tour or X-Forged (only if they are OK durability-wise)
-Wilson pi5
-Taylormade r7 TP

The Wilsons are only $300 and The Golf Warehouse.

The Callaway X-Forged are really, really hard to hit, I think. The X-20 and the Tours are sweet.

As are the Ping S-58's and Taylor Made r7 TP's.

I would personally go for the X-20's in the 3-5 and the X-20 Tours in the 7-PW. If you go on the Callaway website, they have a pretty good deal with some iPod's. I think you'd get a free Nano or Shuffle if you order a set (dollar amount would be satisfactory). Check it out.

Also, check out the Nike CCi Forged--they have a satin finish. Really sweet feel although they felt a little light. The clubhead could use a little more mass it feels like. But give them a try.

Last but not least, try out Bridgestone's irons. They're sweet and satin finished, I think.

TM's 2005 RAC Forged CBs. Forged is the way to go. If you can find them, you can get a good deal on them since they're 2 years old now.

Find something cast, the R7 TPs are very popular.

The main component of "feel" is sound and the OEMs have finally realized this over the last few years which is why you are seeing a lot of vibration dampening clubhead designs. They are trying to mimic the "sound" of a forged club off a cast club to help get the forged iron buyer to switch.

That's why the R7 TPs have that funky badge and was the main reasoning behind the "RAC" technology.

The r7's just look busy to me, with all the graphics and stuff.

I don't think I would ever be able to give up my Mizuno's. If I were going cast, I would get the Ping S59's or I10's

I'm all for the Pings. They really are the most durable irons that I find. Just try to BEND them sometime. There's a reason there's a little dimple on the back of the hosel.

I've demoed the Callaway X Forged and found them to be very forgiving. Please understand that most forged irons are made of softer metal and therefore probably aren't as "durable".

Forged will last a long time though if you get the lofts and lies checked periodically.

Ping S58, very blade like yet easy to play and by far the most durable on your list. You can also request any swing weight you from ping at no extra charge.

The Pings and the TaylorMade's are the best fit for your desired result. The Callaway's other than the X-Forged have too much offset for you based on your preferred characteristics. They aren't players clubs at all, even the Tour X-20s. They are fine if you like offset and forgiveness with minimal feel, but not for someone who wants a thin topline and little offset. The X-Forged are great, IMHO, but like all carbon steel clubs they will wear more quickly than stainless/cast. If you don't mind the feel of cast clubs, they are the way to go. I wish I could stand them. They fall into two categories for me: rock like hardness, or dampened to the point where you have no feel. I curse my father for giving me an old set of Wilson Staff irons as my first set: it ruined me for cast clubs, much to my chagrin. You didn't ask, but FWIW, picking the correct shaft is at least as important, probably much more imiportant, as picking the right head.

There's only one thing other than cockroaches that would still be around after a nuclear war, and that's Ping irons. I work at a golf store that takes in used clubs on trade a lot, and I've never seen any other club come back after a lot of use and look as good as a Ping set does.

The TP R7s are sweet as well, but if you want something that'll last forever, you have to go with Pings! The I10s are pretty sweet too!

Thanks for the post. I also am leaning towards PING/TM........those pi5s look nice too tho and are cheap.

How do the i10s look? You hit em? Anyone hit em?

I agree on shafts BTW. (most effect on the actual shot)

Haha nice. Ya they do wear well eh. You like those i10s Stew? Nice looking? For PING it's either those or s58s.

...

One more thing that comes to mind to anyone who can answer..........can PINGs be bent to adjust lie?

I haven't hit the i10s. They look a lot like the S58s from the top to me. Stew's comments seem right on point. I never really thought about it, but Pings do always look almost like new, even after year of use. Ping's generally just don't look right to my mind's eye (I prefer shinny clubs), but the quality is undeniable. The S58s are good irons, no doubt. Note- I find their shafts to be a bit on the light side, although some prefer that.

Bending Pings a Myth

Pings can be bent up to 4 degrees!!!
I got this straight from the reps mouth...and I've done it.

Also they will put Dynamic Gold's in if you like for a small upcharge....how do I know....I ordered a set today with DG's for a student.

Sorting Through the Golf Nut's Catalog.

check reviews on bombsquadgolf.com.almost every iron imaginable. I had rac LT"s,went to mizuno mp60s,no comparison, probably not as durable as the racs but what a difference in feel.Thats my 2 cents, good luck

Ping offers dynamic gold s400 as a stock option (no upcharge). Thats what I have in my old i3 blades ping DGS is s400.

Bird man....

think outside your box here......

Do you really want durable over playability?

I don't know too many people that play one set of irons over 5 years. You got a long time out of that set.

I've got a recommendation....
I bought a set of mizuno mx-23 irons on ebay, brand new, confirmed by Mizuno to be authentic for 325.00 delivered.
What I like about the 23's is they have a satin nickel finish, are not game improvement irons (they are more game enhancement irons) and they take a good beating.

For that price, if they last you 5 years, you'll be ready for a different set anyways.

A good friend just got a new set of mp 30 mizunos for 350.00 on ebay. They have a chrome finish and will show wear faster than the mx 23s but...are a great deal for that amount of $.

Having played Callys, MacGregors, and others, I am addicted to the Mizzys. Great clubs, especially if you can score them as reasonably as I did.

I'm sure there are some folks out there that want to poop-poo ebay. I have bought a ton of golf stuff off ebay with zero bad experiences. You have to be wise in who you buy from and ask plenty of questions.

I just picked up a brand new Hibore XL tour, V2 shaft, chord grip for 165.00 delivered.

Think outside the box. Personally, I think Pings are the most hideous clubs out there and wouldn't want them in my bag if they were free (sorry ping owners, one man's opinion). I wouldn't want them just because they look the same 10 years down the road.
