Also, if anyone is a club fitter here can you esplain to me the relationships in shafts and spin rate. Ie: what kickpoint and shaft type typically generate lower spin rates. I consistently have about a 3500 spin rate on my driver and from what I've read ideally it would be less.

thx

Tball, the optimal backspin rate with a driver depends on your SS; when it's rather low, more backspin is your friend since your carry is more important than roll. Only golfers with higher SS may benefit from less spin.
As regards shafts - generally, shafts with high bend points (i.e. stiff tip ones) help to generate less spin. I suggest you to go for a fitting session to a reliable clubmaker and you, with his help, will estimate all aspects of building a proper driver combo for you.

Cheers

Dariusz, you're probably right. Unfortunately most of the golf stores that I go to the guys trying to fit you are about 15, and I'm not a very confident they know anymore than I do.

My swing speed is about 105 according to the monitors, I'm launching from 12-14 degress, and getting spin of about 3300-3500.

Whatever that means...

I am very familiar with those data, since they are practically the same as mine. All of them. They seem to be good, maybe a tad less spin would help you...

A couple of questions:
- what is the loft of your driver ?
- what shaft are you currently using ?
- what is yout PTR (or ball speed) when your SS equals to 105 mph ?

Cheers

Right now I have a Titleist 907D2, 9.5 degrees with a YS-6 shaft, stiff. I believe ball speed is in the 150 area.

By the way, thanks for the help..

According to my TWGT Trajectory Programme, the optimal data for a guy (like us both) with ball speed 150 mph are:
- launch angle: 14-15*
- ball spin: 2400 rpm
- achieved carry: 245 yds
- achieved roll: 24 yds.
Your PTR is really good (150/105). The YS-6 stiff shaft seems to be generally OK in your case, but may be a bit too tip soft and even overally too soft for you (its bend point is mid, while in fact X-flex is recommended for a 105 mph SS according to the GD company) especially if your tempo is quick and your transition is strong. If you have a rather fluid tempo and not a very hard transition and you love the feel - personally I'd leave it.

Hope that helps a bit.

Dariusz, thanks for the help. I probably have a bit of a quick transition, but it's slowing down as I get older. I appreciate the confirmation that the driver I have should be good.

I just need to get down to that 2400 spin rate..

Last thought, that costs nothing....try to put a bit of lead tape on grip (below your hands), say, 10 grams. It will diminish the SW of the club, but should shift your shaft's bend point a bit higher. I am not a fan of counterweighting, however, I am aware of the fact that it's a good solution in some cases.
Check rpms after this.

Good luck !
