What is it that separates Tiger from other golfers with regard putting skills?

I think his belief, focus, calmness, and mental controls are superior to anyone.

I think that his green reading, visual acuity, ability to start the ball on line, control of his speed, and understanding of his stroke mechanics are better than almost all tour players.

Maybe we can find out more.

???

Tiger's probability distribution for 'making shots' under pressure can be approximated by a normal distribution with positive skew (fat right tail). Can this positive skew be attributed to "luck"? It cannot be due to luck, given the large sample of shots compiled over the last 10+ years as a pro (or even during his whole golfing career - i.e. basically since he was born).

I don't understand how you define luck. Are you using it similar to how a statistician defines variance? I've always wanted someone to figure out each players EV in a tournament.

One way of putting some concreteness into the word "luck" is the following. Given the probability distribution of a category shot Tiger has played in the past (e.g. a certain putt to win a certain hole/match), can we reject the null hypothesis that the shot he just played is the same as the expected result, at a 5 percent significance level? If yes, then that shot can be considered "lucky" for Tiger.

Tong is full of it.

BTW what I really wanted to talk about in here was his putting technique.....or anything else.....mental.....preparational.....pre-shot stuff...etc. I realize now there may not even be all that much (groundbreaking) to learn.....from analysing Mr. E. Woods I mean.

(we don't know what goes on inside his noggin anyway)

I'm interested in looking beyond the surface though. If you have any unique insights I sez............let it be known now. Maybe we can make this into a good topic.

I read this post and this thread fast the first time over (@ work...busy...) but reading this again...I'm not 100% sure on his lingo (with the fat right tails and all) but I think I get the jist...and I should say....

...Tong is not at all full of it actually. (contrary to what I said earlier :D)

Good post actually. No problems here. So sorry Leo.

He is doing something or "has" something (I hate the vagueness and mystery of putting it that way but oh well) to increase his odds. For sure.

It ain't any kind of a "pure fluke" that's for sure.....and (even though I am religious) I really don't think there is any kind of mysterious force making his putts for him.

It is something.

Though I suppose even if you are a "force believer" or something like that you'll be a lot better off believing it can work for you too.

And I'm not talking about anyone in particular BTW but it came to my brain so onto the internet it goes. :)

There should be a professional putting tour similar to the LDA. I think that I beat Tiger in a putt off more times than he beats me.

There is already. Its called professional Putt Putt. Its on tv every once in a while. Only holes in one count. Watching putting is pretty boring unless the putt means something. Same thing with the long drive competitions. Who cares if some guy can hit it 370 with a 2 piece rock, and a 50 inch driver, at altitude, onto a concrete fairway, one time out of 6.

visual acuity
Tiger has had laser eye surgery twice, and before he had it done the last time said he would be "legally blind" without it

That visual acuity deal was part of Damon's quote from another thread actually Aaron. I'm not even really sure of what it is.

Maybe I will go poke Tiger in the eye though.

...

What's FIGJAM???
