Equipment Question, Smaller Driver Heads

I have a question for those equipment affectionados out there. I'm beginnning to think I would like to go back to a smaller headed driver. I rip my thee wood really well and started thinking that my three wood is probably the same size that drivers use to be, why not just get a driver about the size of my three wood with less loft.

So my questions are.

1. Are there smaller drivers still made and are they any less powerful than the larger drivers. I mean a 9.5 degree driver should be the same regardless of size, shouldn't it?

I also wonder if larger drivers create more drag due to air resistance...

Any help or direction would be appreciated.

Thanks

It seems like some people hit there 3 woods almost or if not better than their drivers. It's from the loft, not the size of the club. A lot of amateurs hit lower lofted drivers because a lot of the pros do or used to, but they would do a lot better with more loft. I would look into buying a higher lofted driver. Go see a fitter. There's not a big market for 3-wood-sized drivers, so I doubt you'll be able to find one. I'm not sure you'd want one either. Try picking up an old Titleist 975D, if you can find one, and hit some balls with it. I'm thinking you'll appreciate the big driver a little more.

I believe NIke is coming out with a new 380 cc driver that Anthony Kim is using now and Tiger might be using.

I think with the 460 cc drivers, I just feel like I'm working hard to get than shoebox on a stick going.

I just like the feel of a smaller sleeker head.

Also, I like to tee the ball low and to me. it's hard to do with the big 460cc drivers. I hit my three wood 230-250 right off the deck.

Maybe some of the lesser known designers like KZG, etc. make some smaller drivers. I would look at the old 975, but I'd rather have new technology in a smaller head.

Thanks

Nope, I use to have a strong 3 wood and maybe I didn't make my point clear.

I don't hit my driver badly. I have a Callaway Hyper X, 10.5 degree loft and I drive the ball pretty well. I would just prefer to have a driver that was a little bit smaller than the 460cc beasts out there today. When I went to buy a new driver though, all the new technology was 460cc.

I really don't get this, well the bigger drivers are more forgiving and have a bigger sweetspot.

I may be wrong, but I thought the sweet spot was the same size regardless of the club size. Also, I think you sometimes you can sloppy swinging that damn shoebox. A little smaller head forces me to focus just a bit more. Lastly, I feel I can swing a smaller club faster, and the older drivers you can hit off the deck much more easily.

Everyone says the bigger drivers are better, but my understanding is handicaps haven't gone down and I haven't seen any stats that says todays player is hitting a lot more fairways.

Just my rant for the day.

I think I've seen only 1 PGA pro hit a driver off the deck and it's because it was the LAST RESORT to win a tourney (long par 5, 18th hole) and he didn't even pull it off. You must be really good if you are looking for a less forgiving driver that you can hit off the deck. Good luck in your search.

Curtis, I think the older players use to hit driver off the deck quite a bit, but the heads were much smaller. I play with a guy who played in college and has an old ti bubble driver and he can flat smoke it off the deck, but I'm guessing he couldn't hit my 460cc monster off the deck very well.

I'm not even sure misses are better, I read an article the other day that said with the larger drivers a mishit meant less lost distance, however the ball typically went more off line than with a smaller driver. It was a pretty interesting observation.

I'll check out the Wishon site, if anybody else has suggestions, let me know. I even thought about getting a custom driver made, but I'm not sure that the custom component guys make smaller heads these days.

Yep, the guy that I saw was on the Champions Tour, I think it was Watson a year or two ago. Had to make a birdie on the last hole.

The sweet spot of a 460cc club is no larger than a 60cc (if there were such a thing). That's why its a "sweet spot" and not a "sweet area of club face".
