This might depend on the golfer and I'll defer to Brian or Tom.

I will say this, though. At the Orlando school with all of the video analysis we did of the 8 students, not one time did I hear Brian ever mention extensor action.

Extensor action helps the player arrive at the correct position for the start of the delivery path of the hands (in other words helps keep you from making too long of a backswing). For example, straight line delivery path: If you don't have extensor action the hands will have a hard time getting to the same top of the backswing position. So besides having to move up or down to find the plane (everyone does this because no two backswings are the same) they (the hands) would also have to move "out" to find the straight line path.

It also helps in the correct rate of "clubhead closing"

Also aids a flat left wrist.

Is it important? you can see how it could be.
Is it imperative? NO

For me the immediate result of using the extensor action was repeatability or more consistancy.

Is a little extensor action all that important, if so why?

Eric:

I guess you didn't make it down to the far end of the range with me. Among other things, Brian and Tom both mentioned, demonstrated and told me to do a better job of maintaining my extensor action at the end of my backswing.[8D]

JP & Erik-

Tom mentioned it to me on the range also, but Brian encouraged me to focus first on fixing my left wrist: my primary "wobble point", or something like that.

But I do have a question: does extensor action STOP at the top with a swinger? If centrifugal force powers the downswing, would adding right arm thrust through extensor action be disruptive? It has felt that way to me, like it is causing my old circle delivery. So should I relax extensor action in the downswing, or try to maintain it (and expect it to become less "disruptive" over time)?

JP,

yeah were down there by yourself...we tried to keep the swingers and hitters seperate, and since you were the lone hitter, they put you there all along, j/k ;)

Jeff,

From what I gather once extensor is applied, say early on in your back swing, you maintain that action (or extension). Extensor action was a hot topic at Lynn's site and I only read a few of the posts, but something in his archives might be helpful for you or anyone else on this item.
