Extensor

With the help of Brian, I've been trying to make my right arm do what it is supposed to do on the backswing. Before, I would pinch/fold it in behind my back. Brian provided me with some great visuals, but I ask that he remind me of a few and I ask for some of you guys to give me a one or two sentence thought on achieving proper right arm extensor action. Its hard to check on your own. Any takers?

Ok, since I had no input here, can someone tell me if I am supposed to be able to hold a towel in my right arm pit during the backswing? I played Valhalla today and my caddie told me (when asked) that my right elbow looked goofy and too far from my body and not tucked in-- but I was trying to achieve 'extensor' action. It was a rainy day and I don't think I left one divot. :(

brian always says....90 degrees between your side and right bicept and 90 degrees between your forearm and right bicept....he says try to look like johnny unitas about to throw a pass......

you should drop the towel when you do it correctly

The right elbow position depends on the angle of the right wrist bend established at Impact Fix.

More bend = more "behind you", or "flying"
Less bend = more pointed "down"

I like the towel to drop out of the right pit and stay put under the left arm thru impact.

You don't want to put anything under either arm!

Under the right arm prevents proper extensor action.

Under the left arm prevents proper Accumulator #4 blastoff - why would you want to hinder a power source?

As for Appleby's swing - I'm really liking that downswing. Perfect right elbow Pitch position of the right arm. Plus perfect impact conditions - flat left wrist, bent right wrist.

So would I be correct is saying the TGM advocates what is referred to by some as a 'flying' right elbow. If not, what is the difference? It makes me feel like my takeaway is outside the target line. Brian may need to reclarify this for me at our next lesson! When I try to think about my right wrist bending on the backswing, I tend to get a wristy takeaway. Couple that with my feeling of the 'outside the line' takeaway for extensor action and you can see the source of my discomfort. What am I not getting?

Your right elbow should be pointing down as the right arm folds. This means the distance between the two elbows remains roughly the same through the swing.

Mikestloc,

If you have right angles b/w forearm and bicep AND tricep and side, then your elbow would not point directly at the ground but would point to it at a 45 degree angle behind you. It would seem that either the forearm/bicept angle would need to be more obtuse or the tricep/side angle would need to be more acute to make your elbow point to the ground, right?
