Fairway Woods, Hand height at address, and Lie of the Club

Hey all,

Been having a really hard time with fairway woods lately. Today I tried something and it worked really good, but I'm wondering why. I raised my hands at address to make the club sit flatter on its sole.

This made a world of a difference. I could suddenly hit my 3 wood off the turf (used to be just off the tee). Squaring the face and path control became much easier as well. I also think I was generating more speed (shots certainly flew farther).

What is are the bad affects of having hands too low at address? Should a fairway wood be soled flat at address? Does this severely affect the way the club returns to impact and works through the turf?

Staying inquisitive...

KC,

Tweaking your hands must have improved your path.

My guess says your lower hands delivered the club too shallow and inside out. Thus, no backspin and elevation.

Very possible.

The feel I got was something that Sam Snead once said. Sam said at address you wanted to "put your hands in a holster". The opposite feeling (cocking up) he said was incorrect.

I did some mirror work after the range session and noticed with my hands in a "raised position" relative to my prior setup, I was in a much more classic setup. It felt funny and felt more straight out than it really is, but the ball flight doesn't lie.

Hogan, Snead, and Nicklaus all advocated soling clubs the way they were designed (not having the toe up, etc). Maybe something to that in regards to building consistency.
