For those of you who think.....

He lost the Master's by less than 4 inches combined, maybe less. He looked very comfortable with his new swing and it will only get better. No golfer excited the crowd more than Tiger this past weekend.

He lost his personal life and reputation by a similar margin. Seriously, it was exciting to watch his play on the front, which was old Tiger at its best. Augusta is made for him, he will win again regardless of his swing stuff, if he can putt like he did up to 2008. Twelve and Fifteen were prime examples of why he lost.

Ahhh, the power of positive thinking (with a dash of revisionists history). Let’s play “guess the year”…

He enters Masters Week with a ton of questions about his game.
He spends hours on the range at the tournament working hard with his swing coach.
Numerous outlets report he is hitting it very good leading into Thursday.
He surprises many critics and supporters with a T4 finish.
He shoots 11 under with 17 birdies, 14 bogies, and 4 eagles.
He shoots 10 under with 19 birdies, 11 bogies, and 1 eagle.
After the “near miss” at winning his 5th green jacket, his fans and supporters predict great things in the months ahead.
The term “He’s back!” gets used a lot.

Now, are you telling me that 2010 and 2011 are not nearly identical?

How about a game of “which one of these don’t belong?”….

Holes 10-18:
4 straight closing birdies for the 1st time in Masters history.
4 birdies with no bogies over the final 7 holes consisting of 2 separate runs of consecutive birdies.
5 straight birdies and no bogies.
3 birdies with no bogies.
1 birdie and 1 bogey.

Guess which charge he authored over the closing 9 holes?

Every player in the field just missed on some putts. Is playing the "But if" game really what its come down to?

Come on.:D

Come on, mgranato. Did anyone on the first two pages of the leaderboard have even half of Tiger's three putts (anyone know how to access these stats)? This is not a small thing that can just be dismissed out of hand.

P.S.: I am enjoying this debate and I'm impressed that mgranato has such conviction as a naysayer. Keep digging!

Curtis isn't that a little nonsensical? Probably 95% of professional journalists and television reporters are pro Tiger boot lickers, so that there really are very few TW haters in journalism. Hard to get a grasp on what a typical one would be.

Whoa, now we're on the same page. I'm saying his play was way down on the list of great performances yesterday precisely because of his putting. Guys were dropping clutch putt after clutch putt, and he looked like he was sword fighting on the back nine. Very impressive first 8 holes, but when it came time to be a Tiger, he look more like a _______.

Too often, I have the conviction of ignorance. :p

You also have to take these putting stats in context of greens hits. Everyone who is high on those putting stats isnt anywhere remotely close to the top in GIR. And it works the other way around too. The leaders in GIR are near the bottom in putts per hole. When you hit a lot of greens, youre going to have a lot of putts. Its always worked that way and always will. People want to talk about Tiger missing a few close putts, everyone misses a few close putts at Augusta.

Tiger was the worse putter of any of the Top fifteen guys on the LB in avg putts per hole by a long shot. He had 6 3-putts. Next closest was Ogilvy with 4.

Putting Leaders - 2011 Masters Tournament

That being said...I had no idea putting was so important in a major championship. Ditto for chipping. :)

Tiger missed an awful lot more than just a "few close putts." Whatever. Maybe Tiger really is haunted by demons now and he'll miss lots of short putts under pressure for the rest of his career. But I doubt it. During the next few months, he'll just increase the putting / full swing practice ratio, which I bet'll fix the problem.

P.S.: Way to stick to your guns, mgranato! :)

I would rather see a great player dominate than a bunch of mediocre players. Pass the crack pipe please.

I will take a puff of that too Scotly. A great dominate player stirs the soul in a singular way. Even if you don't like him/her you are stirred nonetheless. Without them the competition can be great, maybe even entertaining, but something misses. Something rings hollow. Anyway, that's my take and I'm sticking to it!:)
