freeing up the head on the backswing

in effort to get rid of my lunge I have realized that my head stays perfectly still in the backswing and does not move offf the ball or rotate around the base of neck. When I first saw this last night I started lookiing at many different days that I have taped in the past, head always stayed still or move under one inch. It is very difficult for me to let that head move, any tips on freeing it up so I can get more behind the ball at the top of the backswing? In doing a search brian talked about a lesson he gave to someone, finneys brother I believe, and how he moved his hips to allow the head to move. ANy suggestions on set up, back swing etc... on getting the head behind the ball is appreciated.
thanks

is this a trick question? I am very OVER TOP of the ball at the top of my back swing. I have books that I have looked at since I noticed this, pictures I have looked at online since I noticed this, and your threads on pivots with pictures. my upper body position/base of neck/head position does not look like MOST of the tour players. My upper body position looks like the olin browne pictures you posted and I do not want that look because I want to shift in my swing rather then be a rotating player because I feel FOR ME that would be MUCH more natural. WHy did my head stay still in the back swing. Because my golf instructor from years ago held a shaft to my head and said dont move past this on the downswing, well since it was touching at takeaway I assumed I should not let it leave the shaft in the back swing.

WHen 90% of the tour players I have looked at do many of the things you talked about in perfect pivot, (which I have now read that article at least 5 times) and other threads on pivot, and I do not, then I think it is time to take notice and see if I can get to looking more like them. so you asking me to explain myself was either A. a loaded question cause you know the answer ;) or B I did not explain myself well enough in my initial post because I believe I now know what you advocate and why you advocate it and it is that that I am trying to achieve. It now also seems to make sense why most of my other efforts at fixing my probles have not worked, they have not worked on the CORE issue which is how my CORE is working in the swing. A good set up, Perfect pivot back swing, educated hands, and the rest should be cake

I have recently changed my head position... that is I have it looking directly down instead of turned to the right (like Nicklaus at some stage in his career) .
I feel like I have taken the game up again or playing left handed... nightmare but it has changed my plane and everything.. followtru etc. I don't know wether to let it turn all the way back now because originally it was pre turned to the right.
Lets have some discussion on this please it is BIG!

s4p and bbd,
my $0.02 and don't know if this makes sense to,is applicable for or helps y'all or not, but here goes...
as a result of the pivot/head discussions i've been experimenting as well...i've found that if i start out with brian's "level neck" and my nose pointing right down the center of my chest as my lead arm comes up it hits my chin and if i don't move my head it feels really forced and unnatural...however, if i SWIVEL my head so my nose points down my trail leg (ala the recent hogan and nicklaus pics), no problem with the arm and it feels really smooth and natural...as always YMMV...

thanks
I was experimenting with this yesterday and my thought was look left out of my eye sockets at the ball. In addition to the benefits you stated, I would also think that you see the plane line better, rather then having your right eye being outside of the plane line and your left eye being insdie of the plane line. if you had the eyes down the neck and looked at the inside aft your mind would tell you to come across the ball because of the eyese distrorted view of plane line. Thanks for you .02 hcw, do you have any change left for my observation as well?
ps. what is YYMV?
