Full swivel

Is it possible to hit the ball straight with horizontal hinging with full swivel and still not have a flat left wrist?

In other words, if I just focus on the roll thru impact will my hands be ahead of the ball if I hit it straight?

The Imperative of a flat left wrist is satisfied if you have the geometric equivalent of the flat left wrist at Impact -- i.e., the Left Arm and Clubshaft are in a straight line.

You CAN hit it straight I guess...but it's more normal and more desireable to have a FLAT or slightly ARCHED wrist at impact. I'd think the vast majority of ppl will have much better contact, trajectory control, direction...etc. with a flat left at impact.

However, The Goose has his own way of doing it: http://www.golfdigest.com/instruction/index.ssf?/instruction/gd200507goosen.html

So...you CAN make it work...I want to mention that as an option because golf is all about options really...I have had the most success by learning all the mechanics while keeping in mind my own natural tendencies. I think it's a big deal to TRY for the most widely "preferred" way to do it...but sometimes if it works then it just works, right?

Anyhoo...having said that...

Nearly ALL pros look like this:

And pretty much 99% of any of 'em who are realllll good.

It's one of Homer's three imparitives, that says it all.

That second link article really pertains to me. In the pic above the caption "Don't let the handle go backward"... I am the "NO" guy.

I would like to be the "YES" guy.

Other tips/drills for this?

There is a HUGE difference between Horizontal Hinging and Finish Swivel...

Separate but intertwined areas...Horizontal hinging is "holding" the Flat Vertical Wrist "vertical to the ground...whereas the Finish Swivel allows the sweetspot plane and the shaft plane to "rotate" to an On-Plane alignment for the finish...

In many cases per grip type...a flat left wrist during the hinge action of impact to follow-through...then after full extension...DOWNWARD,OUTWARD,AND FORWARD...a finish swivel with take place and the left wrist is bent and the right wrist is flattened...

A lot of people confuse the Hinging with the Swivel:

Swingers 3 swivels and horizontal hinging usually:
1.Start-UP Swivel( Standard Wrist Action)
2. Release Swivel
3. Finish swivel

Horizontal hinging takes place between the Release Swivel..Finish swivel...

Homer - 2-G
...When hinge action substitutes for Wrist Action(per7-10) Hinging may feel like one long, slow "swivel" from Top to Finish. On the other hand, the Release Interval may be so Quick as to make even correct Hinge Action to Feel like one instantaneous Swivel. Some players even intentionlly execute Impact as exclusively a Swivel, making Clubface alignments extremely fleeting and erratic. Study 3-F-7-B.

I like the divot drill...just hit divots man. Um...

Do a search for "divot drill" on this forum.

It's from Brian's "Confessions of a Former Flipper" downloadable video BTW...which is basically 40 mins. or so completely about what you want to learn. Great video...cheap price.

He has an article too called "Lag the Clubhead."

There are many other drills...maybe ppl will share.

Hinge action is only through Impact to the Follow-through (FThrough as defined by TGM as- just past impact; both arms straight; clubshaft at approx. 45* angle pointing at ground).

Another quote from the man himself BTW:

"...There is, however, the "Release Roll" (Swivel) which is a true rotation of the Hands into impact alignment by Accumulator #3 (with 10-18-A only). After the selected Hinge action has been executed, the swivel is again useful for Snap Rolling the Hands into their On Plane Condidion for the Finish (8-12). That is the Geometry of Hinging."

Birdie_Man,

Read 10-18-C....then read 12-3...37,38,39,40,41....16.Start-up L/R...Wrist Conditions(Standard Wrist Action - start up swivel it should've read)
