Funk's top of backswing

The lastest Golf Digest has the swing sequence of Fred Funk.

For the backwing, he goes to "end" and there the clubface is parallel to the sky. Wow, I never knew this about him before, and have never seen it commented on.

Any comments on this and either his "lack of distance" or his accuracy?

Btw, in the same issue, Jackie Burke on page 204 recommends toe down at the end of the backswing. [:p]

Fred probably uses and angled hinge. Good Accuracy. Not as much compression as a horizontal hinge. If he was dying for more distance he could change, but I would just let him keep hitting it on a rope.

Those pages are from Jackies new book. I can't wait to get one. He is old school. I love the way he talks, he could care less what people think. I have seen his swing recently and it looks damm good!

sorry if this is slightly off topic.
I saw the infommercial for the MOMENTUS swing trainer.

They showed Todd Hamilton and Fred Funk doing practice swings with this device, and they also showed them hitting balls with their irons and/or drivers.

The first thing I noticed about both of them: on the downswing, it looks like their shoulders return to square very very early in their downswings. For instance, when the clubshaft is again about parallel to the ground, their shoulders appear to be about square to the target line. and at impact, the shoulders are way open.

It seems like they would not Ben Doyle's "hip movement and hip action." Can somebody please explain the way they swing? Does anybody else swing like that?

Thanks

Re the Golf Digest pics, in the downswing it does look like angled hinging is going to occur, with the clubface cutting through the plane (halfway down).

As to the shoulders, there is only 1 pic in the GD photos to tell, but the shoulders look a lot like other pros in that position (I compared 4 other photo spreads).

An acquaintance of mine, a former Walker Cup player, doesn't love the way Burke talks. He traveled all the way to Houston for lessons from him. After spending all day in 90+ temps with 80+% humidity struggling with a swing pattern given to him by Burke, the next day Burke asks him what in the world he's working on, and tells him to forget that and gives him a totally different pattern to sweat through the day with. The guy, totally frustrated and confused, packed up and came home early. Burke makes up stuff as he goes and has the attention span of an ADD sufferer.

If you're going to throw money away, give it to Brian, or some other proven AI, who actually helps students swing better.

Ya but Duval's face is pointed to the sky.....just as much as anyone ever has....

Angle Hinges thru Impact......he smoked it. Lots of guys smoke it with an Angled Hinge.

I dunno how the hell he does it (well I KNOW how....that's just not my style....couldn't swing like that).

Brillant post MJ. You had one friend have a bad experience with Burke and you bad mouth him.
There is no question that Jackie is a great Player, teacher, and communicator. Look at the number of great players Jackie has worked with and more importantly improved. Jackie is one of the best in the business.

Since this is to difficult for you to figure out MJ, I will explain. He owns one of the best clubs in the country therefore is a top owner. He has taught players who have won multiple majors. One of the best in the teaching business. He won the Masters and PGA making him one of the best players in the game. He was one of the top fundraisers for RICE. Making him one of the best. I could continue but these are several types of businesses which Jackie is amoung the best.

I almost completely agree with you.

MJ, I don't know you at all. Do you teach golf? If so, please list your clients who have won more majors than Jackie's. You can go through a lot of teachers who don't have his track record.

A bad experience is a bad experience man....

Surely he did all those great things but hey, sounds like (sounds like) he may have given a bad lesson...

No one's prefect....and maybe Burke could justify where he was going with it....

...dunno...

And really, a lot of instructors would say normal golfers are prolly more of a test of traching ability than tour players anyway.

Second hand account of someone's supposed bad lesson. Would not hold up anywhere. End of story.
On that note, there is not a teacher in the country who hasn't had a poor experience. It is personalities and the nature of interaction.

Hey, not enough Funk/angled hinging discussion going on.

But I don't think there is a doubt that Burke is irascible and opinionated and headstrong. Perhaps his "love for people" is hard to see. I also have no idea about his swing ideas, but what a lot of people praised him for was his psychological/mental coaching.

True in a way.....second hand accounts aren't 100%...I understand that.......but this isn't a court of law (prove beyond a reasonable doubt!)...I try to listen to all accounts to an extent...

I don't hate the guy...don't even really know anything about him....just took it into account....as I did his teaching of major-winning pros...

Don't worry about it....

Angled Hinging in itself (i.e. Angled Hinging as an isolated thing) isn't the problem...

Not sure if he has lag....

If not a lack of lag....lack of roatation speed I'd guess.

Not really sure.
