Funk's top of backswing

I have never met Jacke Burke but have been told by friends who know him that he is a great guy, very golf swing savvy, super on short game and mental game instruction. Like Brian said, we all give bad lessons sometimes.

I love Brian's comment that the clubfaces are "open". This has been one of my biggest "pet peeves" for years. Brian - you are exactly right. When are mainstream teachers going to realize this and stop getting it exactly backswards. It's like dyslexia in language - up is down, black is white. The truth is, when you start down from that open faced position, the dynamic forces of the swing tend to create a too closed clubface through impact. You have to understand how CF pulls the joints in-line and how that effects forearm rotation to understand this.

It is also one of my pet peeves. I am so sick of golf magazines and talking heads saying that this club position is closed. If we had more teachers that actually understood that this is not at all closed then we would have the average golfer actually getting better. As for Mr Burke's comments about toe down, that is a very quick way to either a flip or a nasty slice.

That's what I find....

I can hit it this way.....but it just isn't right....for me.

I don't like the feeling of having to hold it off.....it's ok for short irons.....but I like more anti-left insurance and a higher ballflight (mostly with long irons I mean).

NEITHER CLUBFACE IS CLOSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THEY ARE BOTH OPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just less open.

;)

What do you consider a closed clubface position at the top/end, Brian?

I agree with BM, bpgs1 and kermitm. If the clubface isn't perpendicular (at a right angle) to it's swing path, it's either open or closed. Like Brian said, Funk's clubface is slightly open. It's a geometry thing.

It's physically impossible to have a closed clubface at the top, and darn near impossibe to even keep it square. The forces on the moving clubhead try to put the sweetspot in the plane.

Hey, not enough Funk/angled hinging discussion going on.

But I don't think there is a doubt that Burke is irascible and opinionated and headstrong. Perhaps his "love for people" is hard to see. I also have no idea about his swing ideas, but what a lot of people praised him for was his psychological/mental coaching.

I live near Champions and have while I don't have any personal experience with Burke, I have heard plenty of stories from both current and past members...I think "asshole" is the most often used word I hear. I played Champions (Cypress) a few weeks ago, and it was not in very good shape, particularly the fairways, and I know several who left there because of course condition, or lack thereof. Now, of course, none of this means he is not a good teacher, but what good is it to be a good teacher if no one can stand to be around you?

I'm sorry, what was the topic here...something about angled hinging???

A GD 2002 interview with JB, descibes him as "a peppery contrarian of salty language."

Has this too:
quote:Mickelson, like Crenshaw known as an especially well-mannered citizen, says nobody ever talked to him the way the bombastic Burke did. After a first pilgrimage to Champions, he returned home and, still under the Burke influence, called his wife a "dumb ass" when she was late meeting him. He apologized contritely.
