Interesting stuff. Thanks for the link.

I'm not right now sure of the different components in play, but he sure captured some big differences.

Blah.

Gary demonstrates an overly overly Bent left wrist...which will kill any slicer BTW....and anyone without a pretty Turned (strong for all u non-TGMers) grip.

You can Swivel it open w/o having a Bent left wrist....and it will be PLENTY open enough....no need to Bend that sucker for most people IMO.

...

When he demonstrates what Tiger's doing.....he seems to be doing a Twistaway type deal. Single LWAction + Arched I guess. I personally don't like that much for hitting long clubs.....but it's good for shorter clubs. (for me anyhow)

I'm not 100% sure what Tiger actually does with his clubface BTW....but Gary may be right.

But he's wrong about the over-Bentness IMO.

I dont think he wants you to have an overly bent left wrist. We all know thats junk. I think he is preaching a slightly cupped/flat left wrist is better than a bowed left wrist.

Recently, Luke Donald was on the golf channel explaining why he hits the ball farther than ever before. One of his key changes was getting the trail elbow away from the body similar to Tiger...

That seems to be true actually (Kappa)...I just watched the clip again.

....

I would agree mostly.....

The wrist would look very very close to perfectly flat with a neutral grip.

Get the thumb under the grip....or "Get the left wrist more under" as Gary says.

...

In my experience....the Arched wrist he demonstrates could be good for hitting short clubs.

He demonstrated something closed to an arched wrist, but I don't think that's what the video was showing for TW.

Tiger and Fred Couples

Tiger and Fred Couples gave a one hour clinic at our golf club over the weekend.
Fantastic ball striking by Tiger, Fred only hit about a dozen balls.
Lots of good info from Tiger about his swing, preshot routine, ball, and clubs.
When asked about what swing thoughts he had during the swing he said aside from his pre-shot routine the only thought he had was... he turned and faced the audience and took up his address position(face on) "see this slight angle between my left forearm and left wrist I try to maintain this angle throughout the swing".
So maybe Player was not too far off.

In his coffee table book there is a pic of him at the top of BS with a seriously cupped left wrist.

If i'm not mistaken that was from a while ago with a different grip.

I was watching Mercedes Championship "great finishes" on the golf channel a few days ago and in 1997 Tiger pretty much had a 10-2-D grip, or "turned" or "very strong."

Today his grip is much weaker and thus the NEED for the flatter left wrist.

Of course those two positions are related. I've not kept up with the details of his swing at all. But the confusion of 'flat' when it isn't flat is really problematic for some...

Tigers grip

Since I was standing behind him when he was hitting it was hard to tell how strong his grip was. When he turned to towards me to demomstrate something it looked like his grip was pretty neutral and had mid-body hands.
The sound and the ball flight were very impressive. He could hit high, low, or in between plus draw or fade in comination with the high and low.

?

1) The thing Gary Player left out which left his analysis incomplete is WHY do the hands do one thing or the other based on the wrist position at the top? Actually I guess he did but i didn't think it was a very good explanation.
2) Two items that are going to make Hogan's elbow closer to his body is A) they've stopped him earlier in the movement than Tiger and B) They have a different camera angle- Hogan's camera is more in front of him.

No comment on better, worse, right, wrong, or explanations- just a couple of observations.
