Here is what folks call the "Geometry of The Circle":

I have often said that it is a VERY inaccurate representation of the golf swing.

It is.

Below is one I did this morning for fun.

Only one problem, it isn't correct either.

The center of the shoulder turn (middle of the balck circle) MOVES in a real swing.

The uncocking of BOTH WRISTS (and the right one is uncocking faster that the left one!) are causing the club to make more of an inward move.

The left arm can bend and rotate all sorts of ways.

The clubshaft bows downward, lags and leads.

Etc, etc, etc!!!

But....have a look:

I don't understand this obsession with 'circles' in the golfswing. If anything, we should be considering 'paths', and stop this circle nonsense .. it's so unscientific.

Yes, you can draw all the circles you want, but the resultant path is closer to an 'ellipse' ... now try to talk about that complication!!!

As for the hub of the swing, I refer you to The Search for the Perfect Swing, page 32 where it is stated: "The trouble is that the golfer is a very wobbly machine indeed, which makes it difficult not merely to fix the axis of the (swing) plane, but even to identify it."

The rotation centers shift based on the distribution of body masses. Approaching Impact, the final swing center may be located between the sternum and lead shoulder, but closer to the sternum.

Anybody who attempts to reduce the golfswing into a series of circles is guessing in futility, because it's the resultant elliptical path that determines nature of the golfswing .. and that varies with different body types and swing styles.

Don't exist in a 3d world?

Downswing sequence: wh, red, yellow, blue.

One colour at a time. (let's say blue)

Top down:

Hands circle. (topmost blue)
Left shoulder. (smallest blue circle)
Left arm. (blue line just short of 12 o'clock)
Golf club. (blue line points to 6 o'clock)

Right shoulder also moving counter-clockwise, remember.

...

Look at the radii (i.e. club) of the larger circles to see club "in motion". Sequence ends with blue, just past impact.

Largest circles represent a "snapshot" of sorts, and not true path of either the hands or clubhead, off course.

Very very obviously, the true path is an ellipse, or whatever you call that thingy.

I am now a hypnotized Manzella Robot after staring at Brian's image. (but never drink the Kool-Aid!)

Hope that helps though.

How is knowing this going to help you? Golf is too analytical... One if basketball was like this.. I never would have been all-state

Well it could help anyone for any reason.

Esp. teachers.

What I mean is, it can be useful to someone else whether it's useful to you or not, b90.

You know, you could just go start any thread you want, right?

Go ahead...

Congrats on your All-State selection.

Too much BS in golf, man.

This place cuts through it like a knife. (Ginsu)

I get it as well. The Geometry of the Circle diagram is simplistic and everybody here knows that simplicity = incomplete.

Basically the club passes through all of those colored circles, yet still hits the ball...kind of blows up the whole premise of the "Geometry" IMO.

Yet some are still holding out hope...and throwing little pot shots. Funny thing is, this actually stands up to some scrutiny, without funky camera angles to prove a point.
