Why do golfers grip the club the way they do? Meaning overlap or interlock or baseball...yes there are more variations but these are the most widely accepted. Until Vardon came along the baseball grip was the norm. Why did interlocking and overlapping become the new norm?

10-1-A Increasing the amount of overlap further diminishes the leverage of the right hand. (Interlock is basically the same as overlap except there are no adjustments or variations)

10-1-B Very effective for the strong, deliberate stroke - low speed high thrust. (not worrying about separating the hands)

So, should a hitter use a baseball grip and a swinger use an interlock or overlap?

This seems to be the case, but Homer in 12-1-0 and 12-2-0 uses the same grip.

If a baseball grip was used would the heel pad of the rear hand be able to push through impact as well? It seems it would loose some of that connection between the left thumb and right heel pad, or right thumb and left heel pad for you lefties. Loosing a little control and distance, but this is all just a thought off the top of my head so it may be wrong.

The baseball grip makes PP#1 harder to 'keep' in place. It turns a "rotation point" into more of a 'gate' hinge. Basically taking the pressure points 'off of their plane'. The overlap vs interlock is more of an anatomy issue IMO, and I really disagree that there is no difference between them. There are big differences in how the body works depending on how you grip the club. It is a defining component and the real root of all pattern compatabilities.

Ed I didn't say there was no difference. I said they were basically the same. Meaning Traditional overlap with one finger the same as interlock and the way the hands are oriented to each other interlocked can be duplicated with overlap.
