having problems with right shoulder down

I'm hitting pull hooks lately. So I'm trying to have my right shoulder down and left higher so I won't have a round shoulder swing. However I kept hitting it fat. So I tried to open up my body more on the downswing while shoulder going down. I think that helped a lot, and i don't feel like my right elbow gets stuck behind anymore. Is this the right way to pivot? Right shoulder down, body opens?

Stop trying to think about getting the right shoulder to go more down and think about getting the left shoulder to go more UP AND BACK (back is important otherwise you'll fat it).

While some people respond to trying to do things with their right shoulder it is the minority; left shoulder up works better for the majority of people.

Jim, great visual there. For me though when I concentrate on this I pop my left hip forward and my right shoulder drops down to my right foot. I call it a collapse eventhough thats probably not the correct term.

Then you are not incorporating the "back" of the left shoulder going up and back.

There are 2 dimensions to the right shoulder action.Down and forward. The down part is easy, the hard part is the forward. If the right shoulder only drops but not driving forward as well, then you will hit it fat.

This equates to what Jim said.Right shoulder down and forward means left shoulder up and back.I prefer to focus on the right side as I believe hitting(pushing) takes over from swinging(pulling) coming into impact and you can't push with left side.Driving with the right side is further insurance against flipping.

Not sure you want to deliberately open up the shoulders though.Although they should be open at impact, you never want to feel that they are open unless you want to deliberately come OTT.

Went and worked on this today. Worked well with the driver. My irons I was hitting thin. Maybe a little too much up. Should I maybe try to pull straight through with my left shoulder?

I might get a bit a flak for saying this but I am not a fan of left shoulder up as a swing thought.

We are trying to hit down on the ball especially playing off the deck and I don't see how you make that easier by lifting the left shoulder. The left shoulder should stay low for as long as possible with the right shoulder dropping.

Sergio actually drops his left shoulder to initiate the downswing but you can only do that if you have lots of accumulator lag.

Seconding ej20, isn't the problem the "run up," or lack thereof, if one is hitting it fat when concentrating on moving the right shoulder down?

jwat,

Check you're not also lifting your swing center as you try and "lift" your left shoulder....

The "Carry" in NHA 2.0 helped me big time. I never did get the fact the right shoulder needed to go forward as well as down.

You are 100% correct on this. My swing center has been raising or unwinding lately. Been trying to bend over more and keep my chest over the ball. Still having problems. Any suggestions on keeping that center in place?

Simply focus on it (7th cervical bone) as you swing....try and keep it in the same point in space until AFTER impact...

Update: Killed my driver today doing that. Hit 12 fairways today.

Thanks puttmad for the advice!

Ok, so it's been a few days. Any resolve?

Played Sunday, hit the driver great. I pull hooked every iron shot and just could not straighten it out. I'm looking for a little insight before I hit the range to try and work it out.

Thanks.

SL,

What was the trajectory, high or low?....

not fat, just super big draws.
I feel like I might pull the club with my left too much? not sure.

One of the things that I noticed is that on the down swing my left shoulder is pointing wayyy to the right. When i don't have my left shoulder too much to the right I seem to hit the ball cleaner.
