help my dad (videos)

i posted this on another site, but usually this forum brings some different opinions so i thought i would ask for advice here as well.

My Dad has been fighting an overswing and crossing the line at the top. He hits a Driver very well but has problems with irons and hits the occasional shank with a wedge.

Any comments about his swing good or bad would be appreciated.

Thanks.

to me, i think he needs a better pivot in the backswing and needs to learn to lag the sweetspot in the downswing. it looked to me that the lack of turn forced his arms to keep going and 'run into' his body, hence across the line overswing. he then has to thrust quite alot with his lower body, which can cause him to get under the sweepspot, which would explain the occasional shanks, and he flips it square.

this would also explain why he hit that pull, and also why he struggles with irons, as you can get away with leakage with a driver with it being on a tee, but not an iron off the ground.

watch NSA and use the backswing pivot or find the 'perfect pivot part 1' article (if there is still an archives section :( ), and lag the sweetspot in the downswing

we read through perfect pivot part 1, good stuff there.

doubled do you have any advice on what he should be working on, and could you elaborate on the right palm?

Have him hit some wedges with the feeling the right wrist is bent and the palm is ALWAYS facing away from him....as if he could dribble a ball the whole way through the swing

He has a very arm dominated swing. He does a good job of swinging like that though actually, great extention through the ball which is rare for arm swingers, so at least he gets out of his own way going through. He is nice and loose with it and has good lag but he is also pretty sloppy too.

He just needs to let his body get involved to match the arms and stop around parallel on his backswing so his timing doesn't get thrown off. His problem is that his arms are outracing his body the entire swing. This is why he hits the hooks, the arms and clubface are early.

Your old man has potential if he makes those changes. Although overactive and alone, I like how he lets his arms whip around. Also, I like the towel hanging from the back pocket, classic.

I like how he refers to himself in the third person.:p

He does have a pretty decent swing, far better than most men his age.

yeah he can shoot some good scores when his timing is on.

Chris Sturgess, you mentioned he just needs to stop around parallel, the problem is by his own admission he has been trying to do that for about 40 years :)

hopefully he well get it figured out but i think we are officially out of ideas for stopping at parallel on our own.

Simply tell him to drag the club back feeling no lift whatsoever. Should stop short or on parallel with that thought alone.

He has trouble stopping at parallel because his backswing is all arms and if he stopped at parallel it would feel too weak to him. Tell him to feel like his shoulders and hands are moving at the same speed, together. And feel some pivot going on in the hips. Then he will feel much more powerful and not feel the need to overswing. He could do these things in front of a mirror (face on view) so he sees what he's doing as he's doing it and where parallel is. And then the drill of pausing parallel at the top for 3 or 4 seconds, then swinging though will help too. This will fix the problem.
