To All Brian Manzella Academy Instructors and Members!

First I'm 52 years old. Over the last month or so I have developed severe arthritis in my right hand. It is getting very difficult and painful just to grip the club, let alone excute a golf shot. I would appreciate any and or all recommendations to help relieve the pain.

If you recommend a grip, if it's not against the rules please provide manufacturer and model #. Be as specific as possible.

Any other recommends other than grip are welcome as well.

Don't want to quit but with the Manzella neutral grip, it is extremely painful to grip a club.

Thank you,

Jim T

Try some using some arnica gel on your hands before you play...you can get is at Whole Foods, or vitamin shop.

Which joint (s)? Is the joint warm to the touch? Does is come and go, constant, only with/after activity? In 52 y/o male osteoarthritis is most common. Gout comes and goes as does pseudogout - swelling and pain is very severe. RA is symmetric and constant. There are others so be as descriptive as you can.

I would say that it is osteoarthritis! Its the first joint below the finger nail. Its painful in all fingers in that joint except the thumb. It's not warm to the touch but it is always sore to the touch. With activity such as golf it worsens during a round. Have little hard bump like things at that joint as well. My right hand is much worse than my left, but same symptoms just to a lesser degree on the left hand.

For all others out there I hope I have given enough detail.

Thanks,

Jim

I agree it sounds most like osteoarthritis. Psoriatic (psoriasis) arthritis can have a pattern that affects mainly the 1st joint under the nail (DIP), but OA is much more common. Some patients have a more "inflammatory" appearing OA and an old malaria treatment called plaquenil is sometimes effective. There is a topical NSAID gel (voltaren) which sometimes works. Also some use topical lidocaine patches - cut off a small piece and wrap a band-aid around it. Cortisone injections can be used - results vary. You certainly could take pre and post round NSAIDs (ibuprofen/naproxen, etc). Extreme case you can see orthopedic hand specialist- they can sometimes shave down the bone spurs (likely the nodules you feel).

Arnica Gel

Arnica Gel seems to work for both me and my son. My son is a pitcher and uses it after a start and believes it helps him recover faster. For me personally I think it helps with inflammation.

What part of the hand ? Inside? Outside? Fingers?

Your Right!

Well my question is this. What is your doctor's opinion?

If it was a perfect world, you are right I would have gone to my doctor for his opinion first. However I have been out of work for nearly 6 months and I don't have insurance.

Besides what so wrong with asking for remedies, or therapies, etc. When you golf, you don't shoot the bull with the guys and ask questions like this one or seek an opinion of professional you may know in the field.

Yes, I need a doctor an will eventually go, but I certainly see no problem with changing grips or using some gel before and after a round.

Besides with the healthcare issues this country is facing you can't run to the doc for something like this initially. If the problem persistedor worsened I would find a way to get to the doc, but right now, grip and gel sound just about what this doctor ordered.

Take it easy. I didn't say there was anything wrong with asking for advice.
Soft Grips, not dangerous. Voltaren creme? Prescription only and potentially
dangerous in certain people. So just be careful about following the advice.
