Help! Topping driver at the range...

Practice at the range was going okay until I started using my driver. I always want to hit that driver extra hard, someday I'll be able to stop myself. Regardless, I started topping balls like a madman...finally I just had to quit because I was afraid I was going to start making this a habit.
What causes this? I'm thinking maybe I was hanging back on my right side, but I'm not sure.

Thanks,
p

how high is your tee?
how forward is your ball position? Actually put a club down and measure it before answering.

You are lifting your head. (just kidding. I dry heave when I hear that...)

Check your path. Way too inside out (drop kicks - hitting too "up" on it) or outside in (divots with the driver - to steep). Either bad path as mentioned or you are an amazing flipper with zero lag pressure.

This is the answer.

Thanks! I wasn't able to get online to see the replies before my Friday night golf match, however, I only "doinked" one off the tee. I've never been accused of being "too inside out" before, so I guess it's a good thing!
As always, excellent advice - thanks again!

I think you should hit a half swing with a driver and see if you hit that solid. Then a three quarter swing. Then full swing. And then it should be pretty clear what you were doing differently with the full swing to top it.

The probability is that the loading on a full swing gets him below plane.

The less-than-fulll swings will show him nothing.

The less than full swings will show him that how he's loading on the full swing is what the problem is. Once he knows that he will likely change how he loads to something that results in solid contact.

this is a very large assumption and most people won't understand and be able to correct themselves.
