High Loft Wedges

I heard Brian saying he's not a big fan of 60 degree wedges.

What do you guys think of Mickelson's 64 degree wedge, the one he's using in this years US Open?

Think you can play the same kind of shots by skillfully manipulating a 56 degree wedge?

From Mickelson:
"It also gives me a chance, as you mentioned, to get my club setup optimum for the golf course, and I put a wedge in that Roger Cleveland over at Callaway helped me design after I made my first trip here. I called him up from Winged Foot and said, "Roger, I need you to design a 64 degree wedge. I need it with a certain amount of bounce, I've got to hit a lot of high bunker shots out of the sand."

I have used that club extensively, the only club I've used out of the sand, I think, and it has saved me a ton of shots.

The first week I put it in the bag was at Memorial because I wanted to get a little taste for that club, and I hit the shot on 10 where it was replayed where it was a flop shot that went in the hole. Then I used it out of the bunker on 16 out of that plugged lie that flew up and rolled in.

The shot today on 10, I couldn't have done with my L wedge, I had to use the 64. I've used it a ton around the greens, and that one club, if I'm able to be successful tomorrow, that one club has saved me a lot of shots, more than one or two a round possibly. If I'm able to be successful, I will give credit to that one particular club for being the little extra edge."

Nope . . . the key word is "manipulating."

If you can't/don't hit down on the ball then you are in for a disaster with a 64 degree wedge. Mickelson is the only one who can do that...I know plenty of 4-8 handicaps who can barely hit a 60 degree wedge. I think 56 degrees is fine for most golfers.

I love my 64 degree wedge. I use it a lot around the greens. I put my hands ahead and I get a 3:2 carry to roll ratio for chip shots. I can hit great flop shots with it only a little open. It's great out of the sand when you have to stop it. I'm a good short game player, but certainly not close to tour level. I think as long as you can get to a solid impact position around the greens a 64 degree wedge might be a good idea. My other wedges are a 50 degree pitching wedge, 55 degree sand wedge, 60 degree lob wedge. I threw out my 4 iron to make room for the 64. I think the single best thing about the 64 is being able to swing somewhat aggressively from 40 yards. (I swing my left arm parallel to the ground.) Overall, best club I have in the bag. It is a Cleveland 588 RTG.

I'm pretty sure that Tiger is the one who said get rid of the 60* as it would make things much harder on tour.

Maybe Tiger said that as a proposed rule change; but he carries an LW 60 degree wedge. If you check the Whats in the Bag link at the golf channel web site, it has been in his bag for just about every victory.

Yes Jim, it was Tiger who said that.

EdStraker, Tiger said it would make things more challenging if they banned everyone on tour from using a 60 degree wedge. It doesn't mean he's not going to take advantage of using a lob wedge himself when everyone else is using it.
