I went thro this a while back....
In my case, what Brian said is spot on....
I tried keeping the right elbow bent longer.....result was inconsistent at best...
Eventually I realised I was overdoing the "right shoulder under and up" that you tend to develop for and in-to-out swing, i.e. getting under plane......you can usually tell you are overdoing it when the club ends up pointing downwards, down your back at the finish, rather than parallel to your eyeline.....
My own cure was simple, siimply make sure I swing my right shoulder around more (diagonally) on the downswing, rather than under....plus making sure I finish with my right shoulder pointing as far left of target as possible...
By doing it this way I eliminated the need to hold the right elbow bend and all that stuff...
