Hogan Swing Video

A good 3 minute video of Ben Hogan swinging from 1956.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=yrHrgxwd-OQ.

Doesn't seem to follow the entire 5 lessons model.

He has mid body hands even with the short pitches and his elbow are definitely held loosely, pointing outward and not tied down and pointing at his hips.

Wonderful video.

It also demonstrates many things about Hogan's swing that people have argued endlessly about.

1) It demonstrates that Hogan doesn't fully straighten his right leg during the backswing, when using a wood or iron, as Bennett/Plummer claim.

2) It demonstrates that Hogan has his head BEHIND the ball at address and a slight spinal tilt AWAY from the target - even when using a short iron - and does not have the vertical Stack&tTilt posture as suggested by Bennett/Plummer.

3) It demonstrates that his ball position, when using short irons, is just ahead of the center of his stance, and not just inside his left heel.

4) Amazingly, his hands are frequently centralised between his legs at address, which gives his left hand a cupped appearance - despite a weak grip. His elbows are definitely not pointing inwards - like he demonstrated in his Five Lessons book.

Jeff.

What parallax problem are you referring to with respect to this series of capture images from that Hogan video?

Jeff.

It looks like the camera is positioned perpendicular to his feet/stance line. But if his stance is open copmared to his plane line ( like it says in Modern Fundamentals) then the plane line is acutally to the right of his stance line. this might lead to parallax error.

There is a down-the-line video sequence in that film that shows that his stance is only slightly open when using a short iron (1-2" difference in feet position) and that shouldn't produce much parallax error.

the shot should appear "straight" from the down the line view.

< 1) It demonstrates that Hogan doesn't fully straighten his right leg during the backswing, when using a wood or iron, as Bennett/Plummer claim.>

Remember the endless debates on this point and my refusal to back down?
Know you know why.

<His elbows are definitely not pointing inwards - like he demonstrated in his Five Lessons book.>

Another point people refused to believe (although this was in a different forum).

I've always said, if you're so smart about Hogan's swing, demonstrate it.
I did in the midst of a midset that was entirely against me. If Leadbetter and these other guys know his swing so well, DEMONSTRATE!

One other point, Tiger Woods would not beat this man "every time", esp. in US Open type of courses. No telling what scores Hogan would have shot with better greens, clubs and the modern ball.

For a funny take on Hogan vs. Snead, youtube: John Jacobson on Hogan and Snead.
