hit those chips that bounces twice and stops dead that the pros do. is it posible with our equipment and balls? the best i can do is two bounces and some roll TGM style ala Ben Doyle or Brian. is there a special technique or ball placement for this shot? Thanks

I think the ball has a big factor in this... I've just changed to Callaway HX tour balls from Titleist and can stop em dead now after the Check...My wegde also has a V-high Spin rate,

Where I stop them on the green is a problem I'm still working on.. :(

Ball
Course conditions (how close the grass is mown)
Wedge grooves

I have yet to hit a wedge that stops a ball harder/faster than the X-Tour MD grooves.

i see i was just wondering if anyone was able to hit those type of shots, also i was wondering do you take divots with a wedge??? I find it much better for me when i dont, however when i do take a divot ball flies much lower!!!

Yes, "anyone else" is able to. I play with 2 guys that do it all the freakin time. The one guy doesn't bother me much because he just has a really upright swing. But this other guy is a +3 handicap and I just can't beat him. His wedge game makes me want to throw up it's do damn good. I'll throw a PW to 6 feet and feel all good... then he throws a low dart at the pin and stops it 1 foot short. I HATE HIM!

How do you

You got to get the ball [a premium one] climb up the face of your grooves of your wedge or it won't grab like you want it to.Lee Trevino was the master of this shot.

It's called—in Manzella-ese—The "Tour Pitch"

How do you HIT the Tour pitch?

Well you DON'T hit it like a "Flipper/Ben Doyle" pitch, or any other "up the left arm at the end of the follow-through" pitch.

You have to have the club go down to a VERY SLIGHTLY forward leaning shaft at impact, and then havet he clubhead go RAPIDLY BACK UP with lots of face layback.

You will BARELY brush the grass if you have good lie.

I have gotten MUCH BETTER at this shot as of late, so good, in fact, that I can do it on shots up to 60-80 yards.

Have to do a video...

Hey Jim, I'm about to order an X-Tour wedge, do the mack-daddy wedges spin too much? Have you hit the one with the Mickelson grind?

A video would be great. I also don't have the "tour pitch" in my arsenal right now. I have the flop and the regular pitch that doesn't check, but when I watch tour events EVERYBODY is hitting the "tour pitch." I need to learn it.

how does tiger woods check and spin the ball inside 50 yards, even though his club stays up the left arm into the follow through?

Ben Doyle teaches flipping.

Are you suggesting that Ben Doyle's pitch is a flipping action? Surely not?

Me too!

I too would be interested in this - I can hit the shot sometimes, but turf conditions, both behind the ball and where it lands can dictate a lot of the reacition. I also find my ability so inconsistent on the shot judging the length is very difficult and I'm putting back from where I came from, from 25/30 feet as often as not.

(Note to self - practice this shot more...........)

As Brian mentioned, the secret is to get the clubhead up and away just after impact. I have found that by letting my left elbow bend and pull inwards very quickly, I can get the club up and away quickly - minimal if any divot - the angle of attach is shallow, not steep. This allows the back of the LH to keep pointing skyward (vertical hinge). The clubhead never passes the hands.

There is a feeling of "briskness" to the stroke, but the speed results in spin, not distance

Takes a little practice, but worth it.

the spinner

I am a pro, and hit this shot a lot. I'm amazed how excited amateurs get to see the ball spin! Brian suggests a method I don't even give thought to but as usual, he's right on. If the greens are not rock hard (which is either serious tourney conditions on Ponky Muni) anybody with BM's impact conditons, the right ball and a wedge with decent grooves can do it.

Like he says, it's not a "punchy forward leaning impact," although this does spin the ball a lot but the trajectory diminishes the stopping power.

The "feel" that may help you is more of a rounded, "connected" arms to body motion that occurs briskly. There is still no leakage, but the PP3 stays behind or under the shaft beyond impact.

Put a towel under left arm/chest to monitor PP4 and rotate onto your left heel. Add some speed, DON'T leak and you'll be zipping them in there from 40 - 80 yards in no time.
