How do you play chip/pitch from spongy first cut ?

A course that I play a lot is under new ownership and the have changed the set up around the greens to a US type style. Instead of getting a lie where you can get at the back of the ball when you run through the fringe I am getting situations that I have never dealt with before. The first cut is is made of thick spongy grass about the same height as the ball and is like a crew-cut. If I get lucky and the ball is sitting on the top I have no problem but I don't know what to do if the ball is sitting down or half way sitting down. When I make a normal chip the grass behind the ball kills the stroke and I get a flubbed shot. I have been using a steep hit stroke where I dump the club into the back of the ball and leave it in the ground and a cut shot not unlike a bunker shot. I am getting better results doing this but I am unsure how these shots should be played. I know that the UK Walker cup players have to learn this shot when playing in the States. How do you play these shots and isd it possible to predict the outcomes or is it a bit of hit and miss? Thanks.

Play the ball forward in your stance, open the face of your wedge and hit it like a flop shot, letting the face slide under the ball. Just make a good follow through no matter how short your backswing is. A 60* wedge is useful here.

Brian: Do you use a 56* SW or a 60* LW as your club of choice? My Sw has about 10* of bounce and my LW about 5*. Is this a bit of a hit and hope shot or can you get really good at it ? Thanks.

Is this shot played like the stabbed bunker shot where you leave the club head in the sand or does it have a follow through? Does the shot impart spin to the ball? Thanks
