Hunter Mahan, wow what a nice move. Anybody know anything about him, who does he work with, etc.? I really like his pre-shot swing rehearsal.

Good Pivot

Probably he has the "Never hook again" video, for sure.

Tracing A Straight Plane Line right down the line.
Great swing! and a good result...

Mahan's win

If you watched the coverage Sunday, especially Mahan's iron shot on 18 in regulation, you got to see the value of a very good tour caddie, John Wood. Mahan first win, a short iron, shifty winds. They pulled a hit it MAX club, felt a puff against, Mahan backed off, and changed clubs. You could see a steered 8 iron coming. Then John got him to put the club back in the bag, rerun the numbers, figure the wind, pick the first club, and commit to the shot before starting his routine. Then Mahan stiffed it. Often under pressure golfers have a tendency to hurry up and hit it. John just helped Hunter get committed to the club and do his routine with a clear intent. Then Hunter's abilities could shine. A lesson for all of us.

Brian, would you say he swings too far left if anything?

I didn't think there was such a thing. Look at David Toms and most any of those guys...their hands go hard left and fast after impact...their hands disappear (looking from down the line) by waist level...I don't think you can't do that without going hard left.

you can swing too far left, slicers do it all the time just like hookers swing too far right.

After freeze framing his driver swing, he definately doesn't swing too far left. It's really "on plane" but just more left than most pro's these days which is why it looks so far left.

If anyone can tell me how to do a freeze frame still of youtube i could show you.

I have his video paused where the club is at the swivel point, you can't see his hands (cuz they are left), club is still outside his hands (barely) with the face looking perfectly left (full roll) and the right shoulder is just slightly above plane because he's past the follow through but still perfect.

All of the above creates a driver swing that goes very straight, far and if anything might fade a little. From telecast i saw it seemed to me that he hit a pretty damn long ball with a slight fade to it.

What's funny here is this that he is the perfect example of how you hit a full roll FADE.

The way I freeze-frame utube videos is to download the videos to my computer using Keepvid ( http://keepvid.com ). I then convert the video to an avi file using the Super video converter ( http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html ). I then study the converted video with the V1 Home swing analyser program, which allows one to freeze-frame images by advancing the swing video single frame-by-single frame. I then use SnagIt to capture the single frame images as a jpg.

MAC USERS: Download file via keepvid.com, then download Wimply FLV player and open your get_vid.flv file via Wimpy, and then download iSquint. Drag your .flv file into iSquint and conversion is complete!

I love his pivot, and the way his arms appear synchronized (he uses the pivot and PP#4 to control his rate of acceleration perfectly).
No apparent wasted motion. His tempo also really suits my eye.
He looks the way I "feel" when I swing my best.

Swinging Left

I like when his club exits the swing it looks to cut his left bicep in half.
Below his left shoulder on the follow through.

I'm going to implement this in my personal swing as I swing too far right and get that club exiting way above the left shoulder.

Something I've been thinking about the last few weeks.

We'll see how it evolves. It's a great swing, no doubt. But he hasn't exibited the type of shotmaking ability to contend on big time courses. It's a great swing for hitting 160 yard wedges but he'll need to be able to tame some of that blast thru impact to be able to create the type of iron play for majors.
