I am physically unable to...

hit the ball first. I was at the golf dome Yesterday working on bottoming out after the ball. I tried putting my headcover behind my ball about 6-8 inches and couldn't even come close to missing it(with a freakin Gap Wedge no less). When I did miss it, the ball barely got airborrne. I am gonna try to keep working on this in the spring when I can actually get to the range but I am beside myself. Why can't I do this simple thing? I've been on here for 2 years, have all the vids, etc. and I still have the same dumb, flippy, shallow, throwaway swing. I mean...I can't even get the club on the ball any other way. *Frustrated*

Any Suggestions would be appreciated.

Its kind of hard to fix your problem on a mat. Once you can hit outside, practice slapping the ground with the club, taking a shallow divot. Get the divot forward in your stance then put the ball behind it. Another thing to try is to keep your wrists stiff during the whole swing. They will still cock/uncock a little, but it doesn't always take concious hand action to accomplish it.

No it's not physical. I like to think I know the concepts in theory but when I get out there I cannot execute. The shorter the club, the worse my contact gets. I simply cannot get any compression or post impact divot from wedges. Brutal.

hit balls out of divots

hit just shortish pitch/punch shots

you'll learn quickly that way

Funny you should suggest hitting out of divots. When I do that I hit beautiful, crisp shots...it's like my brain turns off and it just "happens". Try hitting off of a good lie and I'm paralyzed...it's uncanny.

if its a mental thing, instead of hitting a golf ball, throw a tee down and try to hit that (cheap then alternate). Sometimes mixing it up helps. Mental picture on the golf tee of your worst girlfriend or boss helps too........

Conkanen, put on some warm clothes and step out onto the frozen tundra of Winnipeg (hopefully not actually frozen but if it is so be it) with a wedge, an 8 iron, whatever, and no ball and just take divots. Just make practice swings on real turf somewhere and take divots until you know what that feels like. Once you are making full swings and shooting out nice filet of fish divots then pick a spot on the ground to start your divot and take some more. Then the next time you go to hit balls it will be clear to you how to swing through the ball.

I think that is a great idea Chris. I haven't really tried beating the snot out of the ground in a long time. I think I really some divot drills to get use to that sensation of hitting the ground. For whatever reason, over the years I have started to pick the ball off the turf with this weak a$$ flippy swing. At one time I could compress that ball and stick the club in the ground on command.
