I Can't Figure This Out! Updated with Video

My practice at the range on a given day is as follows:

10 swings with some carry/left side bend, swing left, good contact, lower trajectory, 145-150 yards straight shot to baby fade.
10 swings with no conscious carry /left side bend, swing less left, more roll, great contact, higher trajectory 160-165 yard 10 yard draw.

I traditionally play a draw and always have, but it is essential for me to practice some NHA because I start overdoing the draw and get underplane.

I am left with the deduction that the closer I am to a better path (closer to zero) , the worse/shorter I hit it.

Why?

What am I missing? I know that a draw goes further than a fade/straight ball.

If you can figure this out, I will put you in the will.

There's no reason a draw should go further than a fade in the air. Can you post up a swing. I have some hunches but would like to see it.

my guess

Is that your fade pattern incorporates a little less effort. The club gets motivated by gravity and guided by the carry.

Your draw pattern has you swinging with gravity + muscles to get the club down the line (less left). You're pulling the club out from behind you; to do that, you need more force than just gravity.

I left out that those 10 swings are with my 7 iron.

If we can get some decent weather on a weekend day, I'll have some video up.

I could not turn the ball over today at all, so I have posted a straight 7 and baby cut 7. I can't see much difference, so I would guess I am closing the face at different times. I also added some others for grins.

Nice swing!

The thing that stands out to me (as far as having trouble turning it over) is that near the finish your left elbow is out a little and it doesn't look like your left thumb is completely under the shaft. Do you usually finish like that?

With the cut also being lower trajectory than the draw, this is what I was going to guess -- adding right hand too late in downswing to get maximum right hand "fats" addition (a problem I often have)?

Nice swing.

It looks like the club face is opening on the way down. Stop the vid when your club is last parallel to the ground in the downswing. The club face looks more open than at the top.

I'm working on the same thing. I've been trying Kevin's suggestion of a strong left hand grip with a weak right hand with some success.

Thanks.

I did notice the face and it doesn't surprise me this time of year, although I usually have no problem hitting a draw, today I couldn't.

On a separate note, does it look like my hips are opening too much on the DS?

Great backswing!! I cant see the 7 irons face on but the driver stance is way too wide. Looks like you unwind before filling up the "gap". This might drag that left arm a bit and force you under the sweetspot, which it looks like it did. You try a little right arm (as niblick pointed out) too late.

Thanks for looking.

Feel not real, man this is a frustrating game. I am miles ahead of where I normally am this time of year, but still need to work. More carry then?

I would like to see your numbers on a trackman with the driver...Brian and Kevin really haven't come out and said how to hit up on the driver or the secret pattern number 13 but I would think that you wouldn't want to fill the gap as much and start unwinding a little sooner to be able to hit up on the driver, am I wrong Kevin? By the way the swing looks really nice jbrunk.

One thing I did notice at the top of the swing when you transition the club doesn't really look like it adds any lag, I am wondering if you are doing something with your hands at the top that actively stops it, it almost looks like you start your sweep release right there.

Because you unwind as you make your move left. This leaves your hands high and then you slip back under it late. Carry is more for people who drop under it early and get underneath. People who get under it late are a different story.

IMO you need to narrow your stance and stay closed as you fall into the left side. This could help you turn or tumble that sweetspot out sooner and get the handle a little more down and in.

That makes a lot of sense and I think I was doing this last summer, I just can't remember how I got there.

Thanks Kevin.
