I have become a pushin'/hooking machine

Well, no more fades or slices....been pushing an sometimes hooking the ball as a missed shot.

Also, been hitting the ball out towards the toe with my irons. So, I got some old irons out. My current irons (Mizuno mx-23) are 2* flat. My old Cally Fusions are 2* up, Still hit it on the toe with the Fusions. So, I'm not sure the clubs being too flat are the cause.

So, I'm looking for advice before I start messing with NHA. My driver has been beautiful as of late. I'm about 20-30 yards longer than a couple months ago (I'm hitting 265-275) It's the irons I'm mostly pushing and hooking. Occasionally, after a few beers on the course, I hook the driver too!

My straight shots are pretty. They are either straight or just a baby draw that goes a little right then a little left....ending up straight. Not having any trouble with trajectory.

Any thoughts??? Think it's time for NHA???

Well if the beer is causing you to hook your driver, maybe you should stick with the hard stuff or something. If you just can't give up the beer, tee of with a wedge.

Quick fix:

Stand open about 10* to your target and swing normally, see if it goes away and report back.

Jim, funny you mentioned this.... I was trying to hit a cut shot today by doing just that (open) and the ball freakin' went straight. I only hit a couple and thought it was kind of weird and maybe I was missing swinging along my toe line or something.

I'll try a few more tomorrow...playing 18.

Not funny, just good training ;). People did used to pay me for this kind of stuff ya know ;) :D

He was probably aiming right and now he's aiming straight. Maybe you have a perfect swing when aimed correctly Bill....

Sounds like me. Was at the range the other day with my father-in-law. Was hitting my driver ok, nothing great. A few straight with a few big draws (ok they were hooks). He asked me if I could hit a fade. I said sure and "opened" my stance and swung. End result= straight down the middle. Sounds like Chris hit the nail on the head for me at least.

I would love to play a fade. I haven't seen a ball go left to right after that damn Never Slice Again :)

So Jim,

Is that the theory behind your suggestion....I am aiming too far right??? Or, I am swinging too far right???

I was doing the same thing: Setting up for a cut and the ball flight was straight. I couldn't judge if it was bad aiming or swingpath. My driving has been fine with my somewhat closed stance, I'm scared to death to open the dance on that club !

The reason why setting up OPEN and not "down the target line" worked is because you are swinging too far to the right and you are too CLOSED at impact which only makes the problem worse.

By standing slightly open to your target, your hips/chest will be more open sooner in the downswing and even if you are still TRYING to swing right the effect of you already being more open will pull the club on a less in/out path and allow the ball to stop hooking/pushing/drawing.

That is why if you go to an event on tour you will find A LOT of players that setup slightly open on almost all of their shots because they are limiting the effect of hitting a shot that goes too far left.

Jim's idea of opening up also helps my hooks quite a bit. Gets me swinging more left and also make it easier to get the left hip cleared so you can get on plane.

is it a bit like lee trevino?

A lot of people do this. Standing open and swinging normal gives me no fear of the left side. The only problem is the occasional hard pull for me that goes either out of bounds or in a hazard. Happens at least once a round. My last round was 11/14 fairways hit and one OB and one in a hazard

Paging Jim...........

I have played like this for a few years and had good success.

Last year i spent a lot of time on the range hitting balls with alignment aids trying to get more of a square stance.

The results were back to the pushes and hooks so I tried NHA but ran out of good weather.

Is this a big bandage of getting more open ? Are there things we should work on to get more consistant like NHA or something?

I'm really STUCK trying to figure this out.

I played golf last night with one of the better amatures in my area. No exageration, his feet and hips were aligned WELL left and open to the target. He plays w/ a stong grip and is one of the longest guys I've played with. On shorter swings he squares us a little more, but full shots (especially with woods) he is WIDE open. I couldn't believe how good he hit it from that setup. Maybe there is something to it.

funny you say that, one of the best juniors i play with sets up extremly CLOSED with almost all clubs. strong grip, fairly flat backswing then traces a very straight plane-line going through.

sort of 'sam snead pull' but not as exagerated

Well....

Played 12 holes before my scramble last night and then a 9 hole scramble.

Turns out the problem was in my set up but....the setting up slightly open didn't seem to work as a fix. Results were inconsistent.

So, while trying the open set up, I remembered something from Brian's last lesson with me. I went to that set up and.....eureka, consistent results with much much better results on misses. Somehow I had drifted away from that set up.

After the fix, I felt much more comfortable over the ball.

Problem is, I started hooking my driver!!! laughing....jeez, does this stuff ever end???
