I just saw the new Top 50 teacher list in one of the golf rags and I'm offended. Some teachers went way down for no apparent reason. Some like the stack and tilt guys came from nowhere to the top 15. Mike Bender, who is a very effective instructor made a huge move up to the top 10. I assume it was the Zach Johnson effect.

Ben Doyle and Brian Manzella are nowhere to be found. I've never met Mr. Doyle, but I've heard Brian's respect for him and that's good enough for me. I have had some lessons from a few of this top 50 and would much rather trust my instruction to Mr. Manzella. It's not even close.

I would write to the editors, but is it worth the effort? Do they even care?

I'm pissed.

Not worth writing the editors. There are a ton of guys who are worthy of being on that list above the present company that occupies it. It is a popularity contest, much like being Prom Queen=)

I voted.

I vote in this survey.

It is voted on by about 1500 teachers in the USA.

It is very silly in one respect. If I am say, the 150th ranked teacher in the USA, and the next best guy in Kentucky is 300th, he can still be listed ahead of me in the "State" list.

The State list is STRICTLY counting the votes of the Kentucky voters like me.

So it is kind of goofy. If you ARE in the top 50, then THAT superseeds the funky rule I just described.

I sure would like to see the whole damn list, so I could see how I am doing.

Instructors voting for instructors? That's meaningless. To pick an instructor, student feedback might be helpful. More helpful would be watching their video instruction, and reading any instruction they have in print.

The best measure would be handicaps before and handicaps after. End of story. I got on this forum in December. My handicap history is as follows:

6/22/2007 5.3

6/8/2007 5.7

5/25/2007 6.5

4/27/2007 7.3

3/30/2007 6.4

3/2/2007 5.6

2/2/2007 5.6

1/5/2007 6.3

12/8/2006 6.9

11/10/2006 7.2

10/13/2006 7.5

9/15/2006 7.6

8/18/2006 7.3

Fairly decent progression for never meeting, or talking directly to anyone. Just some swing feedback from a video I posted, videos purchased, and readings on the forum. I would hover between the 6.5 to 8.0 mark before. Now I'm close to breaking 5.0. So I have to say he must be in the top 5 because I've watched, and read about everything from the so called top 5 and had no improvement.

Well, I stand corrected. I missed Mr. Doyle's name on the list (it was a fast glance in and airport newsstand.)
As I stated earlier, I've had the opportunity to get instruction from several of the instructors on that list. It seemed to me that they are so removed from the handicap golfer that they either don't know or have forgotten how to teach the majority of golfers. They can however help players who already possess extraordinary talent and a pretty sound swing (ie TOUR pros).

Please note there are a few exceptions as well. I would however hold up Brian as a guy who can teach the little old lady beginner AND the top player to get the most out of what they have. Not many can do that. If these lists are to identify the BEST teachers, then isn't it the instructor with the ability to get the most out of the broadest cross-section of golfers? If so, then Brian should be at the top.

You have a point....

I mean..........

For eg.- there are so many slicers out there.......

.....but I've never really seen anyone talk in those mags about fixing the clubface the way we do around here.

Someone must've mentioned something like it somewhere along the line....but it seems to me that should be pretty common knowledge/practice.

Like Brian has said.....fix the slice, hook, and flip and you have most people covered.

Do mags want FIXED golfers tho....?..........or golfers still looking FOR a fix....?..........or maybe they just don't know better (how TO fix).......

I don't think it would be off base to say- prolly a little of everything.

Flapro was a perfect example of believing in "modern" instruction. He came in here and when taught the Manzella way was turned off and dismissed it and thought WE were pompus. THIS IS THE ANSWER. THIS FORUM. Every common problem is solved here by Brian and his staff. Regardless of whether or not GD rates Brian high it doesn't change the fact that we all know he's the man!
