Is Ball Fitting Ligitimate?

After my round yesterday I had the opportunity for a free ball fitting session with the Bridgestone folks. My stats were as follows:

Prov1 (4 swings) 101.8 clubhead speed, 243 yards carry, 16.1 launch, 3700 spin rate

Bridgestone E6 (4) 99.8, 234 carry, 15.4 launch, 3200 spin rate

Bridgestone B330 RX (4) 102.1, 249 carry, 14.7 launch, 2860 spin rate

Obviously they recommended the RX 330, I was just wondering if anyone else has done this and if it made a real difference on the course.

My thought would be that the performance of the Pro V1 around the green might be a more important factor than driver distance. 16.1 launch and 3700 rpm would cause me to go looking for a Driver/Shaft combo that would bring the launch angle and spin down on the Pro V1.

What was your dispersion rate? If it was good with the Pro V1's, based on the rest of your numbers, I'd stick with the Pro V1's. I can tell you 1st hand the RX and E6 don't hold greens particularly well. Did they have you try the B330 RXS? You may want to try the Srixon Z-star or Taylor Made Blacks - they are still around! For my swing, 92 -96 mph, I find them to feel better off the club, get really good distance, and good spin around the greens.

A couple follow up points:

I only play the prov because it is so soft.
Almost every swing was a 10-15 yard push.
Those launch numbers look way too high, higher than I expect relative to my actual ball flight on course. I wonder how much distance I am giving up?

Was this one of those ball fittings were the ball travels a few feet than hits a net? I have a hard time putting much stock into those "fittings".

Find a ball that has the feel and spin you want around the green and then fit your driver to that ball.

I'm not sure it's legitimate to make a strong recommendation based only on those figures. Surely you've got to factor in your ballstriking consistency and then factor in a margin for error that stops your maxed out optimal ballflight turning into a very sub-optimal wormburner too often. Unless you're already on the tour, you're going to hit good and bad drives in the course of any round and I think you'd want to know how your ball reacts to your bad swings, even more so than your good swings. A 4 shot sample isn't going to do that for you, IMOP.

pick a ball from putter backwards..meaning -- putting / short game / wedge shots / iron shots / woods.

I don't play the longest ball i could because i want it to feel a certain way when i putt and also react a certain way on short game (scoring) shots.
