Is there such a thing as not opening/rotating enough of the left forearm

in the backswing or..too much counter clockwise leftarm rotation in the backswing? I know it sounds retarded..but just curious
I notice sometimes on my backswing the butt of the club is pointing behind me a feet away and it causes a lot of bad things..

You really need to post a video from a proper distance at a proper angle.A description doesn't really suffice if you want an accurate analysis.

You could be under rotated halfway into your backswing but end up over rotated at the top.Lots of different shit can happen from halfway to the top.

Someone posted a video of a plus handicap player who popped out(over rotated) his takeaway but then steepened(stopped further rotation) to reach the top.

video coming up in 3 min

first 2.....counterclock wise turn, butt of the club pointing behind me...3rd one let it fan, butt of the club pointing outside...4th-5th one going straight back up, butt of the club pointing down.

The first two is certainly under rotated. You have an extreme arm lift.Nothing wrong with a bit of arm lift but when the left arm gets close to vertical at the top,it might be problematic.

when do you know when to stop lifting?

IMO, you are over-doing this twistaway thing. You need to pronate your left forearm clockwise - the other way than what you are doing now.

Most great swings have a bit of arm lift, the left arm plane slightly above the shoulder plane at the top but not many have an extreme lift.Furyk,Nicklaus,Rory Sabbatini comes to mind but they are the minority.

You can limit the lift by restricting how much the right elbow flies but if the high arm action is more natural to you, then perhaps you can study Sabbatini. He has a similar top of the backswing position although he doesn't whip the hands inside like you do_On the downswing he really needs to lower the arm plane by dropping the hands straight down and rotating the left forearm on the transition. Not a bad move really but hard to do.

Looks like the perfect Golf Digest cover article!:p

Jen,

You are very Jim Furyky, Angel Cabreraish...:)

To counteract the excessive arm lift all you need (if you want to correct it) is do a left arm "pec grab" at address and then hold the grab as much as you can going back.....you will then find this will limit your upper left arm slide up your chest as you turn back....

i'm trying to lower my hands

Kevin: I definitely wants to hit a fade..no more draws for me.
Johnwill: I'm not flexible :/

Lol feels low to me, but it still looks pretty high. should the left arm rotate 90 degrees back? I guess taht's my real question. If you were standing up and the club is infront of you, would your left arm rotate 90 degrees back, and then return 90 degrees back? or more like a baseball player, no rotation and then pull it into a position where you can hit a homerun.

Jen,

First you are just straightening your right knee and spinning your hips around with zero resistance. I don't think you can find a decent plane that way. Is that how you play?

Therefore the club just gets sucked inside and then lifted to the top.

Firm up your lower body and create some coil with the upper body against it somewhat.

Let your left arm roll a little bit clockwise and let your left shoulder take it where it wants to go.

I don't want to start another flat vs. upright war but you gotta bring that left arm down a bit.

Keep the upper right arm a little closer to your side as you go back.

I don't know if this is basically a "position demonstration" but if this is close to your actual backswing you have created next to no torque in your backswing. The resultant downswing would then be a "slide and slap" motion.

Firm up the right leg. Let the shoulder turn "work a little" to turn the hips. Rotate the left arm a bit clockwise. Let the left shoulder take the arm where it wants go (without lifting it).

Watch Brian's most recent youtube video on Derek's motion.

i like how so many people have so many opinions on a swing that isn't live....it's always different when hitting the ball.

For the fade, the 2nd/3rd ones will be a BIT better but to be honest i don't like any of those backswings for a consistent fade.

How would you know that, their not live swings while hitting a ball? He's just posing a non dynamic position. Won't be the same, as you said ...no?
