Not to be negative but this thread ought to be revisited after the outcome because as of right now it is only a fantasy. Sure a little closer to reality in that he has the lead but a lot can happen tomorrow.

That said go Tom!! Hope he buries them! It would be a utterly remarkable feat in the golf world for him to prevail. Absolutely remarkable!!

I think the question of whether or not he is writing the biggest GOLF story of all time would be more reasonable. On that I'd still say no..I'd take Tigers win at Augusta in '97 as bigger, especially at that club with all the hype and with his carisma...etc.etc. For me the story has to "transcend" the sport as pointed out..after all. Sports is entertainment and drama and emotion all wrapped into one.

Thats why the thread says WRITING...as in present tense..I think it's a good thread and we should continue to jabber about it. Tommorow we can just keep on jabbering after the outcome.

There have been a lot of upsets in sports history but not all of them have a great story to go with along with them. This one does because Tom Watson won this same tournament at this very course so many years ago. But I think there are other stories that were bigger.

I like 1980 USA vs. USSR Hockey during the middle of the Cold War.

I will also suggest the 2004 Red Sox coming back from being down 3-0 to beat the arch-rival Yankees in the ALCS, in the face of the 86-year "Curse," with the final 2 games at Yankee Stadium.

And what about Francis Ouimet defeating Harry Vardon and Ted Ray to win the US Open, on the course where he used to caddy, as an unknown 20 year old amateur, showing for the first time that Americans could compete with the British at their own game?

One of my favorite movies!!!

He's not WRITING anything if he doesn't win. Just another nice story like Greg Norman last year. You can all still comment on it I am just saying the hammer has to close to get the major historical acheivement that it could deserve. I hope to be able to comment further on this possible historic event tomorrow.

dont forget .........we are talking about the GREATEST LINKS PLAYER of all time in Tom Watson, so no, not a HUGE upset.....feel good story of the year YES.

Reason not the greatest sports story of all time...........

ABC is still shoving Tiger's cock down everones throat

yes, but you wouldnt expect michael jordan to come back and be MVP, or Pele to come and play for a team again.

thats why what tom COULD do is amazing

if they still had the speed or leg.....SURE why not, but BB and Soccer are speed and quickness dominated sports

that is why golf is so great, you can play at VERY high levels on into your 60- and 70s

but I do understand and agree with your point

Basketball is not even close to being comparable, neither is american football, soccer, or whatever other sport that requires that kind of athleticism. I heard Charlie Rymer(golf channel "analyist") say this was like Dan Marino coming back and winning the Super Bowl, but 10 years later...Laughable, a joke. It is not even close to the same thing.

"Other notable upsets that come to mind: How about the Giants taking down the undefeated Patriots? Villanova upsetting Georgetown in 1985? (most call this the great NCAA basketball upset) Gardner defeating Karelin?" Seriously, you think these stories would compare to 59 year old Tom watson winning the British Open?

Yes.

How many of you folks are 60 years old? Not to take anything away from any others achievements but I remember reading about how our hockey team was a very good skating team and might haver a chance to medal before the games. Tigers win in 1997?? You gatta be kidding me. He was already being hailed as the next great player and his physical capabilities were already well known. We're taling 60 years old here guys against Tiger et al. Many think Jack's win in '86 was the best but he was what, 14 years younger? Hopefully this will all not be a moot point but a win by Watson would have to rank as one of the highest. Maybe some of you don't realize how far and uder control TW is hitting his shots and how far past you he would blowing his tee shots.
Let's hope for an historical ending!

This wouldn't even be the best golf story of all time. Tiger winning his slam is better, so was Bobby's. If Watson wins tomorrow, it will be talked about in the same light as Nicklaus' win in '86, but nothing better than that.

Now, if Watson somehow won a PGA at age 59, completing the career Grand Slam, we'd have a serious story. Not to diminish how amazing a win at the British Open at age 59 really is, but there are better stories. It's probably top-10 for golf at least.

Not to get off-topic, but I think Tiger's grand slam in 2000-2001 ranks at the top of the "Most Under-Celebrated Sporting Achievements of All-Time" list. It seemed like everyone was too concerned with what to call it instead of recognizing how amazing it really was. Just sayin.

Some great moments in golf in my mind...Tiger winning the US Open by umpteen shots at Pebble, Jack winning the 86 Masters, possibly Watson at 59 winning THE Open...

Id have to go with Watson.

As for other sports, Football? nah.. basketball? Nope. the only thing I can think of is Kirk Gibson hitting a HR off of Eckersley in the World Series and USA v USSR in hockey I guess, at least thats the story I hear.

Go Tom go. U remind me of the uncle who beats me every weekend and is 20 years my senior. Let's show the young guns who's the boss. :D
