Just wondering, why 4 in a fly

I am just wondering why is the golf fly is capped at 4 golfers. Are there specific reasons, or a bit of history involved?
Just indulging myself in learning how the game developed.

Why is a round capped at a foursome.

I think it has to do with time and confusion. I've had 6 out there once and there was a lot of calamity going on.

And match play as a preference has been associated with the crude conditions of the early courses.
