"Keep your mind in your hands & you eyes 'correctly' on the ball"

In an earlier thread about keeping one's eye on the ball, one of the instructors said, "keep your mind on your hands and off the clubhead. Always focus on the grip end and what its doing."

I always consider the grip end and where it's at "at impact" but I don't really focus on it like it's a key ingredient. Can someone elaborate?

I think the original poster was referring to "aiming point" from TGM. It's a nice way to think about it in theory, but very few good players that I know (and I know a LOT) think anything about their hands during the swing.

Just my opinion though. I personally don't think a thing about my hands either. I may think something about my pivot, but I mostly focus on executing a feel with the club that produces the ball flight I want (if that makes sense).

I think the idea with this is the fact that you should always know where your hands are in the swing and what they are doing.

Obviously your hands aren't the only thing you should think about in your swing but your hands directly control your clubhead and the clubhead is what hits the ball, so you need to know what they are doing.

Lets just say that if you can learn to always control your hands and what they are doing and their position, the rest is easy... well easier lol

I doubt Kevin was describing TGM, but I could be wrong...KEV...I think it was you eh??

Yeah, I dont quote TGM, ever. But people that have an obsession with moving the clubhead should focus on driving the handle end both ways with their pivot. Holeout, have you quizzed alot of good players on whether they think of their hands or not?

Sounds to me like you are thinking about your hands? The club only has "feel" through your hands.

Good players have relatively passive yet highly sensitive hands to pressure changes and face variation.

I don't think I hit a shot without feeling what my hands are doing...
-sensing pressure
-face
-path

That doesn't mean I'm trying to "move" them in a specific way (sometimes), just that I'm sensing what's going on during the stroke.

I haven't "quizzed" anyone per se, but whenever any of them talk about their swing they always talk about big muscles, and more about swinging the club rather than focusing just on the grip end.

Maybe we're both describing the same thing and I just don't know it.

I get what you're saying. I definitely get all of my "feel" from my hands, but I'm not conciously trying to move them in a specific way 90% of the time when playing. The only time I'll try and manipulate the club with my hands is when playing an exaggerated ballflight, like a big hook or a knockdown or something like that.

I definitely relate to sensing the path and face with my hands, though.

Hi Curbanski

Kevin's advice was to me after I had mentioned my disappointment on seeing the same old pop-out on my BACKSWING! I found it helpful.

An old pro made a whole tour and teaching career out of the "swing the handle" idea.

Ben Doyle told me this during a lesson 20 years ago

I really didn't understand what he was driving at but in time keeping my mind on my hands has helped me combat an early-release problem I've had my whole golfing life. Ben said a lot of things to me during those few lessons that were really hard to understand but over time they comprised some of the best golfing advise I ever received.
