Laid off. Please help.

Hello Manzella forum,

I really need everyone's help with an issue I have had for a few years. I get the club very laid off at the top, this causes the club to get steep in transition and closes the face at impact. I hit a lot of snap hooks with the driver. I have tried getting my takeaway more inward, but I still have it laid off at the top. I really need some ideas on how to stop getting the club laid off at the top I really appreciate any help you guys can provide. Thanks kermitm

Laid off gets steep? Laid off is underplaned and shallow if not re-directed, as in over tumbled to counter laid off. What is ball flight and impact?

Sorry, I should have been more detailed in my original post. I get the club laid off at the top, then more laid off starting down and then the right hand shuts the club in a steeping move. I think it is becasue I would hit behind the ball if I didnt do this move. I have included a video below. The swings in the video are not near as laid off as usual. Thanks for your help.

Your club doesn't look that laid off either. Why don't you try adding a little out toss in the transition? That will smooth it out and get the club on the correct side of the path.

Appears that he sees something he doesn't like on video and wants to change it, rather than trying to change something to improve ball flight with less regard to how it looks.

First of all I like the swing. I do notice some subtle differences between them though. Watching the last 3 swings I noticed a difference on how your right shoulder worked from the top of your swing toward impact. Take a look and let me know if you see the same. I am going to describe one as being "high" , one as being "too much under" and one as being "dead on"......The only other thing I noticed is on your takeaway, you have a slight forward press of your hands that can create a little too much hand rotation that can cause the clubhead to get rolled under plane and create the sense you describe as being laid off. Try keeping the "hands in, clubhead out" feel on your takeaway.

Gosh, that looks like an awfully good swing Kermitm. I don't see any steepening at all...Nothing.
I can see a slightly later than usual tumble, which might mean some super quick hand motion to make up for it which could very well be the source of your inconsistency, but overall it's very nice indeed.

Thanks for all of the replies. I agree the swings look pretty good but I just keep hitting a lot of low left hooks on the course. I drive the ball like a 20 handicapper, putt and chip like a plus handicapper and have a pretty good iron game. I just get really frustrated hitting 12 low hooks a round. Any ideas on why, I would love to hear? Thanks. Kermit

I would like to see a FO view. Have you been on Trackman or Flightscope? If you are hitting low left hooks, you may have path and Angle of Attack issues.

I agree. Let's discuss this further. Say the readings show a "path" problem.......by looking at his swing what would we need to look for as a cause and what change would you make to fix it. The same question if it was an Angle of Attack issue.

Thanks for all of your replies. Brian's advice from early 2009 really helped reduce the severity of the snap hook but I still have the frequency problem. I think the takeaway is part of the problem and plan on focusing on that this winter. If anyone else has an ideas, I would love to hear them. I will try and post a face onvideo later in the week

Very little laid off and NO steep. In fact it looks like a shallow flip hook. Grip? My Tman guess would 3 to 4 inside out?
