left arm question

Here's another quickie.
If the club is not below VSP coming into impact and ostensibly everything else looks decent, what would be a cause of the left arm shooting around the left side of the body as if it's pulling a lawn mower cord. I.e. the left elbow pulls the lower left arm sharply to the left so all the correct momentum vanishes and the club is pulled out of its proper orbit?
I ask because I've seen this with a couple of my students and cause and effect for this one seems to elude me...
(And please, littleacorns, no more narcissism posts...!)

Could it be an unconscious fear of Impact that causes their left arm bicep to contract reflexively that causes the flex in the left arm at the elbow ... ya think ..??!!!!

Some people may have an utter phobic fear of hitting the ball and thinking it might hurt them ..

I got myself on video for the second time ever today. The first time was 11 months back. I have made huge strides in my golf game and hitting the ball better than ever. However, seeing my swing today I was not pleased. Not sure I follow you but below is my video today where I noticed my left arm doing something similar to what you described. Is this what you refer to?

Bad news, Dan ... It looks like you can't straighten your left arm at Address and incline the club shaft to the target. You look like you are going to putt in your Address stance ..!!!!!

Is that your belly interfering with your left arm ... because it looks like it.

You should read LAWs of the Golf Swing to classify your body type and optimal swing style ... which I suspect is a W - Width swing.

Cheers .... :)

Do you have a DTL view?

Steve,

Against my better judgement, I looked into the book you suggested.

Frankly, it looked pretty impressive. At 6'6" and almost 300 lbs, proper swing mechanics have been my white elephant for years. I hit the ball a country mile, but have struggled with accuracy in the past. Finally this past year I have learned to hit the ball straight, my bad shots only being a 10-12 yard push at this point. I put three tee shots over 300 this past week when I played, so I don't want distance as most folks seek. I just want a smooth and repeatable golf swing that will be conducive to hitting more GIR's.

Reading the section in this book on Width players, I saw some interesting stuff. Namely the need for such players to have a swing bottom more towards the center of their stance. I have been trying with great difficulty to move my swing bottom forward as of late. Ball position more centered for the Width player of course due to the suggestion on the centered swing bottom. The book states a tendency to push shots, the need for a strong left hand grip (which I have).

It was a bit odd in fact reading some of this and thinking about how much of it did in fact relate to me. Many things I have dealt with in the past and a few I am dealing with now. Some of what I have tried to force myself to do in golf felt like watching a 2 year old trying to cram a square block into a round hole. Perhaps this book will shed some light on the subject. I ordered a copy of the book on Amazon just now. Thanks.

Dan ... read the entire book, even the other swing styles because you could have a 'hybrid' optimal swing style to account for some of your body oddities. Read Chapter 8 - How to Customize Your Swing ... because your large stature may require adjustment.

You could be a Width player with some Leverage characteristics, or even a Width player with some Arc characteristics. There are many factors that affect you swing style, so you should read and study the book, which is a relative easy read. Enjoy.

oliver,,i submit that you may need to start a regimen of stretching exercises. your body seems very tight and your swing may be molded in such a way as a compensation.

Golfdad, I appreciate your thoughts, but I'm actually hyperflexible. In fact, if I were any more flexible I doubt my skeleton would even hold up my mass!
Therefore, I still think it's a question of technique as opposed to inflexibility.

hello oliver, since i am not a golf teacher, i would not want to impose my assessment on you. but i think being flexible for a golfer is a rather comprehensive concept, not just limited to how much you can turn the shoulder during the backswing. i think a down the line shot may be helpful to other teachers. real teachers i mean:) good luck and regards

It looks to me like your left shoulder is too close to the ball at impact; there's not enough room between your left shoulder and left hand. The only way you could have your left arm straight with the location of your left shoulder was if your hands were a mile ahead of the ball. And if you were able to do that, you might break the shaft with the divot you'd take.

Try to focus on getting your shoulder farther from the ball at impact.

What does that mean, not enough room between left shoulder and hand?..That has me fascinated.
