Left before the center/straight?

Is it true that a slicer (or hooker) has to find what it takes to hit balls to the left side (or right side) before he can hit straight shots?

No, but generally it's easier to make changes in ball flight by making a slicer use kind of "hooker" type moves and vice versa and then dialing it back when it is back under control
