left foot spinning open during the downswing

If you are in a habit of turning your left foot towards the target during the downswing then you are very likely opening your shoulders too early instead of letting your hips turn ahead of your shoulders. I would assume you hit slices or left to right at least from this. If you are moving your right foot through impact or in the follow through that is not that big of a deal.
 
No, if your left foot is spinning aou its because your are not making enough of a pronounced "bump" of weight shift onto it, and are staying on your right side too much.
Try closing your left foot in towards the center and making a more pronounced weight shift.
