left wrist at the top

I had a conversation with an instructor and he told me about how there are some golfers that are cupped at the top, and the advantages of it. So, being inquisitive as I am I started looking at some pictures. From the photos that I saw it looks like Ernie els seems to have a slight cup going up, same with garcia and howell. daly has a good cup in there which is very noticable. I used to think that having the flat left wrist at the top was very critical, but it seems that hogan did not think that way. it seems that some of these players have the cup and it shifts to a flat left wrist in the transition and that leads to extra lag and allowing the hands to stay inactive in the transition.
your thoughts?

Your grip type will determine your "geometrically flat wrist." The stronger the grip the more "cup" there will need to be.

Most people cannot allow a deliberate cup and still be able to come back to a solid FLW at impact. So that's why most people will tell them not to cup it.

I have seen some rich guys with BMW's, some with a Benz...

If you NEED a FLAT left wrist, get one.

If you need to bend it, figure out how much bent, then do it.

That's it, folks....really.

Speaking of the flw, I was trying the credit card drill on the range today; the card was too soft. Any suggestions as to something I can slip into my glove besides a card that you've found to work fairly well?

An approach that works for the flw at the top is to "try to stretch your KNUCKLES--to reach with them--as far around as you can". IOW, by stretching or reaching with THE HAND itself in that way your wrist does get flattened. It doesn't take long to embed the habit. I have never found that I can trick myself with an aid (I'm not putting down the value of some aids with a more direct purpose) ; I feel I have to get to the core heart of the matter, which is to DO IT DELIBERATELY and knowingly.

Hey Brian, PI is learning!! So do you like twistaway George?:)

Coach: splain to me wha IS twistaway... I see it mentioned by have not seen what is done exactly. Is it anticipation of the roll of the backswing -- if so, how?

Twistaway is a move made during the backswing to get a FLW at the top of the swing - during the backswing "twist" your left forearm underneath - at the top of the swing you get a super flw, really helpful for slicers and those with clubface control issues.

There are extensive threads if you do a search - I'll look and post some later.

I have another question, if you have the the left hand on top of the club and are at address, you push down on the fat pad of the hand and you can act like you are hammering a nail, now at addres put the left hand forward into the position of a FLW and try and do the same action. You will notice two things I believe. One is you will feel tension and two is that it will be much harder to get the same amount of wrist cock with a FLW. so going back on the back swing if you have a FLW from the beginning wouldnt it make it harder to get the same amount of wrist cock, which will make it later, which would help make the take away more inside since the club head is coming up slower? It would also cause more tension in the swing. and a cupped left wrist at the top would have less tension, the club head or sweet spot plane would be more upright, and since there is less tension on the start down the club head can lag a little longer ala sergio and hogan. Anyone want to think outside the FLW box and discuss?

glcoach,

Are you familiar w/ a named Joe Dante and his book "4 Magic Moves"? He describes a backswing motion that seems similar and his intent is to get you to a a flat/bowed left wrist at the top. Im sure Brian will show me this move whemn we meet

hogan, els, garcia, daly
all cupped at top with great swings but I guess some people dont want to acknowledge that there is a way outside of the FLW
and lets not forget charles howell 3 among many others
