Leg Drive

Im not a full pupil of TGM but was wondering if starting the downswing with a strong leg drive goes against the grain?

Ive been working on starting my downswing by driving my legs towards the target whilst keeping my head behind the ball. This drops my right shoulder and sets up a good axis tilt from where I then rotate my forearms through the ball

This is new so the timing is a bit iffy but when ive got it right ive been hitting it a long way

Does this fit in with Brians downswing pivot theory or is something to avoid?

Tks Brian

So is this a good or a bad move? I'm trying to feel as if I drive the legs to the left of the target line as I start down whilst simaltenously swinging hard left around the posted left leg. Ive had a tendency to hook a lot and I think this is because my arms outrace my body hence why inm trying to get more lower body into my transition and then work on timing the right side elements (right knee, right shoulder, right hand) coming into impact

In most racket sport, just before we are firing the shot, there will be a balance shift action and making provision for a sit and tilt motion. And it is rather interesting that most racket sport (Forehand motion) is very similar to HITTING pattern and is pretty much a FANNING motion (Hand controlled pivot).
Furthermore, by carryout the above action, we will feel a lot of pressure built up on our right foot (Before or perhaps during impact).

Just wondering what type of grip you are using, and what sort of pattern you are using.
As I find that particularly for Hitter, if they are using a stronger grip at address, they are in a much better position in placing the right forearm on plane, with a result of having the right knee leaning towards the target, as well as the left shoulder moving up a little bit and felt strong pressure from the right foot against the ground. At address, if the balance is spreading evenly between both of the legs (With head behind the ball position), then very likely we will have a pretty good chance in getting straight shot. But if you feel too much pressure from the right foot against the ground (Balance is moving towards the front), very likely we will getting a hook shot.
PURELY MY ASSUMPTION. I could well be wrong¡ any comment Brain?

Hi Joe
Have you heard about Moe Norman? If not have a look to
http://www.golfdigest.com/instructi...struction/swingsequences/gd1996moenorman.html
Moe used to accelerate the club by shifting with his legs , keeping the head far behind the ball. By the way , do you know his nickname? "Pipe line Moe"..
Even if the swing seems a bit "unconventionnal" it includes the 3 basics imperatives:
Flat left wrist
Clubhead lag
Straight plane line
Feel it , and enjoy!!

Interesting that you mentioned Moe, I think Homer had picked up a lot of goodies from the guy. He is exactly what we are talking about using a strong grip and put all his alignment to nearly a zero shift, and just "shake" it.

I would say Im very much a Ballard student, placing real emphasis on his connection theory (inside turns the outside). I worked for a long time in trying to take hand action (flipping) completely out of the swing. I have a neutral grip, else I struggle with hooks

One of Ballards 7 principles ( http://www.departures.com/tr/tr_0900_ballard.html )is this transition movement with the legs (knees). I flit between feeling this move with my knees, hips and chest and am still trying to figure out which will give me the most consistency

What is your definition of Neutual? 10-2-B? Just wondering are you a Hitter or a Swinger?

Yes 10-2-B. I would say I was a swinger in that I dont use my hands to hit at the ball but that may conflict with you guys definitions and I know Ballard likes to say hit with the right side

These are my favorites

Wide stance (Mr Doyle is playing an iron)
Axis tilt
Facing the ball at impact
Right foot stay planted well past impact
Great minds think alike:)

I presume having a wide stance (reasonable width) will maintain the pressure from the right foot at impact?
Thanks for the cool link. I'm in my fifties and have a real fascination for Moe Norman history. Before knowing TGM I tried Natural Golf instruction , based on Moe experience, and it really helped me . The fondamentals are present, even if the swing seems a bit unconventional. This is not the subject of this forum , so if you want some links, files or sequences of Moe send me a private email. It will be my pleasure to exchange on this subject.
