Lesson prep

My golf lesson dream is finally coming as I'll see BManz this Th and Fr. How have you guys gotten ready for a lesson? I think I'll play a little today but obviously not too much. Then I'll make sure and right down any questions that I have so I don't forget to ask them. Show up at the range like 30 minutes early to give me enough time to walk around from a 4.5 hr drive. Maybe make a few swings. What do you think?

Sorry if it's a dumb question, I just want to be 110% ready since I've waited like 7 yrs.

I know this has been discussed before but I am not a big believer in bringing a list of questions to a lesson.

That is another way of trying to fit his information with your information.

The questions that you may ask, should come from his information, that day, based on what he sees you are actually doing - not what you think you are doing.

You are going to see a highly trained and experienced artist - give him a blank canvas!

I agree with savydan. I've had swing-related questions in my head, but they were often predisposed towards what I thought Brian may see in my swing. He often saw entirely different things that were not pertinent to the questions that I thought I would end up asking.

My suggestions are to get there early and warm up. And you may want to have an idea of how long you want to spend on certain aspects of your game (full swing, short game, putting, etc). I've had about 3 or 4 lessons with Brian, and I like to spend time on both the full swing and the short game, as it exposes me more info/expertise about the complete golf game as opposed to just the full swing.

Are you going to post a recap of the lessons?

I don't know Curtis, but I do know that based his posts, he has an inquistive mind. I think that if Brian was presented with a list of questions, he might simply blow them off nicely, and proceed with the lesson. You only have so much time booked, so don't waste it.

At the beginning of my 2 hour lesson with Brian, I listed two problems. Struggling with Driver, and chunking short pitches. He took it from there.
No tech talk, just plain talk. I think we worked on grip for 30 minutes, and mine wasn't all that bad to start with.

You will love it.

Curtis, after a 4.5 hour ride, you need to get there about 45 mins early and take at least a 15 minute brisk walk, then stretch, and hit a couple of dozen balls.

If it were me, I would plan to get there earlier, perhaps much earlier. What if there is an issue with traffic? I'd personally enjoy the drive a lot more with more time margin built in. Take any extra time not needed for warming up and grab some grub at the grill, check out the pro-shop, roll some putts, etc. BTW, I'm jealous! Good luck.

Don't go in with any expectations. What you need to fix is probably not what you think you need to fix. Just pay full attention, I keep thinking back to my lesson with Manz which was almost a year ago and keep finding little tips to help.

Exactly. Take down notes AFTER your lesson. Clear your mind before. Think about the swing the way Brian wants you to think about your swing.

Actually, if you have some sort of voice recorder (say on your phone) use it right after your lesson while it's fresh in your mind and before you want to beat more balls with your new swing.

And not to sound like your mother, but if Mapquest says 4.5 hours, and you plan on leaving 5 hours before your lesson time, you are setting yourself up for trouble.

Yep, already packed away. When I saw Jim I talked in it the whole way home.

Thanks Mom! :)

One of things I really liked about my lesson with Michael Jacobs was that at the end he does a video onto DVD that includes swings and a review of every point covered in the lesson. So you leave with a video and audio summary.

One of my issues was stance width, too narrow. It's hilarious to watch myself take the wider stance and then totally subconsciously narrow it twice during the waggle.

If it were me, I would get there the night before in order to be relaxed and rested before the lesson. If you are spending this kind of money lessons, throw in motel for peace of mind.

I also forgot to mention that I talked my wife into taping the lesson (if Brian will allow it).

Have your wife tape your swing today.

Then doing a little filming on the road, lesson, dinner, talk to the camera documentary style, etc.

Then send it into Golf Channel. They're looking for something to replace the Haney Project. Might save the instruction industry. :D
