Still a million dollar pay day for David............Is it a coincidence that he improves after the NO tour stop every year?

In watching DT's putting stroke, it appears that he takes the putter "more leftward" immediately after impact than any other player. Any comments on the advantages / disadvantages of this, or am I just imagining this? Looks like the face stays square to the target line while the putter head moves left - looks almost like a "cut" stroke.

Funny, noticed the same thing. Would love to hear more about his stroke.

Didn't Scotty Cameron do some kind of study on putting stroke consistency and said that David Toms was the best? I think I remember reading that in some golf rag a few years back.

If I was a betting man, I would say that it is somehow related to what Brian meant when he said that the D-Plane is alive and well in the putting stroke...not that David does it intentionally. He does appear to hit down on his putts slightly (to the naked eye) thus he would swing the putter more to the left.

Just a guess, though.

The full swings on both of these guys seem right out of NHA 2.0 You can really the see the "carry" move in KJ's swing. I was pulling like crazy for DT but it's hard not to root for the Tank, both of these guys are class acts.

KJ's been working w/ the SeeMore putting instructor Pat O'brien who also works w/ Zach Johnson and Vaughn Taylor. I have been using this stroke this season and like it quite a bit.

Look forward to hearing about it.

Based on what I've seen and/or heard, KJ is a very good putter, especially on quick greens.

I question the legality of the super thick grips he uses (though the only part of the rule that they might arguably break is that the grip must be 'plain in form' - clearly, in my book they are 'unusual' in form. The lawyers must have argued that plain basically means 'regular'). I'm not questioning his win in any way, but think they should be banned.

Is this the same KJ that went to side saddle last year because he was putting so poorly? He was 114 in putts gained in 2009 and 91st in 10'. Honestly the stats are not as bad as my perception watching him miss short putts over the years.

I hope that this may help answer your question:
You guys are too much!

THIS IS WHAT ALL THE BEST PUTTING TEACHERS ARE WORKING AROUND!!

If you make an ON PLANE STROKE, and hit the ball on the way up, you HAVE TO HAVE THE FACE OPEN.

Geez....

Or you can HOOK 'EM IN like Eldrick.

the thick grips are legal, but like long putters a lot of people think they should be banned.

The SeeMore putter I use is a malet w/ a normal grip (FGPw), set up with the putter head in the middle of my stance, they suggest looking down the inside of the ball, and not directly over it, so you have room for your arms to swing. Once Im set up, its more of a turn w/ the shoulders than a rocking motion since you are not bent over as much.

KJ did miss a couple 3 footers yesterday, but made the ones he had to...love David's tempo with his putter, and I like his chances to bag a tournament this year.

I was going to say he is 'streaky' but to be honest, isn't everyone?

He certainly had bad putting stats in 2009 and 2010 - though even in those years he was OK from 20 feet. He was in the top 30 putters in 2008 and top 40 in 2007.

This year:
Putting from 15-25' 24.18% 2nd
Putting from 3-5' 80.68% 171st

Which looks about right.

I seem to recall Tiger describing a round of putting by KJ as the best he had ever seen.

The study said that David's stroke made the putter face stay square longer than any other player on tour, but like we all know if you are hitting a little bit up or down on the ball, dead square is not always good. David putts his best with a little more hook action, hitting up a little bit and the face a little open, he "cuts" his putts and sometimes the direction is a little inconsistent as we saw on Sunday. A new look with a putter that's a little more heel shafted and little more "hook" swing and he could do some serious damage this year combined with his ballstriking.

What is he yielding now?

I'm sure a lot of guys could say this, but if David had putted well, I think he would have walked away from the field by 3-5 strokes. He was striking the ball beautifully the first 6-8 holes in the third round and just couldn't buy a putt. He's got such a beautiful stroke, it looks to me like he's going to make everything.

A lot of guys struggled with their putting this week though, I saw Stricker had his streak of 160 some odd holes without a 3 putt broken. Amazing to me you can go that long without a three putt, and I think the record is well over 300 holes without a three putt, crazy..

Mini Verde greens roll beautifully but are impossible to read. I'm sure the stats would bear that out. It is a very new strain of bermuda with grain that is nearly impossible to see.

Well, he hit the ball super and putted well on a very difficult set of greens, which BTW, are meant to be difficult. All in all I'm sure he's delighted with his progress this year. It's now obvious he'll win at least one this year possibly more. He liked his lie for that bold second shot try at 16 in regulation...he's not chicken S...probably only one out of 20 from there goes into the water for him there...as far as I'm concerned the breaks just didn't go his way THIS time, but they will in the future.
