Is he swinging a junior club or an adult club?

Adult club.

Did his father play golf? YES?

I think so.

THe dad has done a great job raising a great, polite young man.

They live in Louisiana, and we have worked for a little over a year.

(BTW, the reference is i inside joke about a famous teacher once asking Lindsey that same question, and when Lindsey said no, the teacher said, "There is nothing I can do for you.")

The poster boy for back to the target!

He used to be an early hip spinner, and backed his hips up in the downswing.

Good stuff now.

How's his pitching from 30-60yds?

We started working on it a lot yesterday with TrackMan's new short game mode. Ball data on shots as little as 3 yards.

How old is he Brian? Great to hear he is a good kid as well. We parents can get caught up in trying to make our kids superstars at something (golf, school, etc) and forget that success is turning out great people.

Hey Brian, do you teach young beginners (not that this kid is a beginner anymore with that swing) the same thing Arnold Palmer's and Jack Nicklaus' teachers taught them: swing hard and we'll worry about accuracy later? I always thought that sounded like a good idea. My son picked up golf late so he already had his own ideas and rhythms to deal with and I can't get him to swing hard at all. I certainly have never swung hard so maybe he's picked that up from me.
I'd appreaciate any teachers' comments on this.
Thanks.

Tony, it really depends for me what the kid is doing. My own 5 year old wails at it and misses the ball. A little bform at the finish helps him. I reserve the right to change my opinion, but I'd just as soon see some form before they go swinging for the fences.

Actually Steve, there is a LOT of homemade in that swing.

That's is the ONLY WAY you could ever, mathematically, be the best teacher of all time. You HAVE TO KNOW when to leave well enough alone. You have to know when to make a big change. You HAVE TO KNOW the science—at least somewhat, and you have to know how to get folks to do it.

I am by no means as good a teacher as I could possibly be, but I am getting there everyday.

Wisdom and intelligence. Mark of a great teacher.

That was the first thing I noticed. Have a look when the shaft gets parallel to ground during backswing...somewhere around 6-7 mark of backswing...he seems to to be waaaaay inside....wouldn't he be a mile underplane at the stage...yet presumably does not seem to pay much of a price for doing so?

For me, an inch underplane equals death...I am jealous.

Backswing positions can influence downswings but in his instance it doesn't, i noticed what you did but his downswing at least looks great. If we had a down the line view my guess would be that it would "appear" a bit like Sam Snead where it goes in/under early and comes down over the initial backswing.

Thanks Kevin. Yah, I don't know how far Palmer's father or Jack Grout took their advice. It's tough to watch your kid flailing and not making contact.

Hey Matt

Wasn't this discussed at the ASII, regarding young golfers, that their hips turn much faster than their shoulders and since they may not have sufficient strengh, that their arms do not get separated from their shoulder (top left by chest).

Yes I recall this from ASII.

I read Brian's description as a a backswing issue.

Hip Spinner : Hips that start unwinding in the transition, and never slow up until they reach the finish, often with a tailbone that moves AWAY from the target.

Backing the Hips up : Hips that unwind with the tailbone moving either backward or not forward enough.
