Looking for a cheap set of clubs for NOW

One of the things Kevin and I talked about was getting some blades for myself. He mentioned Mizuno,Titleist, etc. I have been pricing them and they are just a bit out of my range for this year.
I'm currently in the process of saving up to get fit on a Trackman for a set of clubs. Unfortunately, this will not happen til next year. That doesn't solve the problem of what to play with for this season. So, my plan was to look for a decent set of affordable clubs to get me through the season without having to pay an "arm and a leg". I have nothing at all except for a borrowed 5-iron thats too long and a driver that has an R flex and 13 degrees of loft...just doesn't work for me. Ill probably borrow a Driver from a friend of mine that he doesn't use that will be a little more suitable for me.

So, Im looking for a set of blades and wedges that are pretty cheap. Kevin thought standard lie and length would be just fine for me with a S or X shaft. The absolute most I can spend for irons and wedges is $600. Any ideas????Thanks.

ebay, dude

i second that. . .you can easily get a good set of sticks and wedges for considerably less than $600 on ebay. . .if you are wanting blades, check on some mp 33s

Just beware of fakes, don't buy from any of the sellers offering "best prices on golf gear" ertc, find someone who is simply moving a single set of clubs, and generally sells other items, much less chance of getting a fake.

You are "new" at golf right???? Why in the HELL would you buy blades? Many pro's don't even play blades. I've read many of your posts and something just doesn't add up...

I think you should go and get fit with Ping. They have the old model g-5 irons still available (a great club) but at a fraction of the price. $392 for 4-pw. You might only want 5-pw and have enough for a couple hybrids too or wedges. I think these clubs would be ideal for a beginner golfer like you! And you can get fit by a Ping club fitter maybe even the trackman!

I know Brian is high on this brand! Best of luck!

A suggestion from Kevin

Well, are you going to answer the question or not? Why blades?

I hit Kevins 8-iron yesterday...He has Cleveland Cavity backs. I don't rem ember what model. He said he had thought about getting blades, but didn't want to yet because his set is MOI matched..I think. I asked what I should get...and he said that he thought Guitar Hero was onto something with his research into cavity back versus blades and sweetspot balance. He thought that it was easier to feel the weight of a blade and that cavity backs felt hollow to him. Also that if you didn't hit it in the center of the face the distance forgiveness wasn't that great with a cavity. If I screwed up the explanation, Im sure Kevin will straighten me out.

HOLY CRAP!!!YOU ARE THE MAN

I suggested blades or a forged metal with a cavity and as little offset as possible. The idea that every non pro needs big game improvement irons is just wrong. he has high swing speed, a good knack for solid contact and a tendency to draw. Alot of people should learn with blades and not dumb up their equipment. If you cant turn it over, are weak, or cant hit the sweetspot you should try the other stuff

Like I said, most pro's don't even hit them. Yes, it sounds like he's going to make the switch but that guy is on a whole different level. I've never seen your swing but I'd be surprised that a new golfer would benefit from blades. Just my 2 cents.

Good luck (hard to pass up free clubs)

EDIT Post was made before I saw Kevin's so that answers my question about why

If HJack doesn't work out, I suggest EBay from a seller who sells a large quantity. I say don't spend too much early and definitely buy used at first. If you stay hooked, you'll develop preferences later. Maybe buy something in the Mizuno MP-50 or 60 series for irons? Also if you have a golf galaxy in your area, they have been selling off used sets at wholesale prices. It's easy to get a good set of quality used irons under $250 and wedges and hybrids for $30 a piece there these days.
